  1. Over very low heat, melt chocolate with 1/4 C sugar and water, stirring. Stir in vanilla ; set aside to cool.
  2. Measure 1 C sugar and all remaining ingredients except confectioners sugar into large bowl. Mix at low speed till combined; mix at high speed for about 2 min. Remove 2 1/2 C batter.
  3. Beat chocolate mixture into remaining batter. Alternately spoon plains and chocolate mixture into greased 9 inch springform pan. With knife, cut throught batter a few times.
  4. Bake at 350* for 55-60 minutes (top will be cracked). Cool in pan 10 minutes; remove sides of pan and cool cake on rack. Sprinkle top with confectioners sugar before serving.
