"I make these every year for Christmas. I readily admit it's a pain to stand at the stove and stir for 15 minutes, however once you've had homemade caramels you won't be able to go back to store-bought. Enjoy!"

  1. Melt butter in heavy 3 quart saucepan. Add the sugar and salt and stir thoroughly. Stir in the corn syrup and mix well. Gradually add condensed milk, stirring constantly. Cook and stir mixture over medium heat to firm ball stage 245 degrees (approximately 12 to 15 minutes).
  2. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Pour into buttered 9x9x2 buttered pan. Cool and cut into squares.
