In large pot, cook bacon or heat olive oil. Set bacon aside. Cook carrot and onion over medium heat until golden; add garlic and sausage chunks, stirring often, until sausage is lightly brown - about 5-7 minutes.
Add potatoes and broth; stir and bring to a boil. Reduce heat. Cook until potatoes are soft - 10 minutes. Add greens and cream (half & half)about 5 minutes until heated through. Add pepper and hot sauce if desired.
