"After looking for years for the perfect Lofthouse sugar cookie recipe, I finally combined all the ones that failed and came up with this. Now it is a family favorite. When I take them for school events no one believes that I didn't buy them!"

  1. Sift flour, powdered sugar, salt, baking powder and soda together. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream shortening and sugar.
  3. Add eggs one at a time.
  4. Add vanilla.
  5. Alternately add flour mixture and buttermilk to shortening mixture, add more flour if needed to make a semi stiff dough.
  6. Chill dough at least 1 hour.
  7. Roll dough into walnut sized balls on heavily floured board.
  8. Transfer ball to ungreased cookie sheet,leaving 2" space.
  9. Gently flatten ball with the heel of your hand.
  10. Bake for 8-10 min. Bottom should be golden, but the top should still be white.
  11. Frost when cooled.
  12. Frosting:
  13. Cream butter, shortening and vanilla.
  14. add powdered sugar and milk alternately until desired spreading consistancy.
