Mom's Best Lasagna (for special occasions only!)

"My mom made this lasagna for every dinner party and special occasion. I would ask her to make it for my birthday instead of going out to a restaurant like we usually did for birthdays. She died last year, and I thought it was gone forever, but I found the recipe in my grandmother's recipe box, and was so happy."

  1. Cook lasagna noodles according to package.
  2. Brown meats. Drain, put in large pot.
  3. Add tomatoes. Stir in tomato paste, garlic salt, oregano, and basil.
  4. Heat to boiling, stirring occasionally.
  5. Reduce heat, simmer uncovered about 20 minutes until mixture is consistency of spaghetti sauce.
  6. Preheat oven to 350.
  7. Stir together cottage cheese and 1/2 cup Parmesan.
  8. Set aside 1 cup meat sauce and 1/2 cup mozzarella.
  9. In ungreased 13x9x2 in. pan, alternate noodles, meat sauce, mozzarella, and cottage cheese mixture. (3 layers)
  10. Spread reserved meat sauce over the top.
  11. Sprinkle with reserved Parmesan and mozzarella cheeses.
  12. Bake uncovered 45 minutes. Let stand 15 minutes before cutting.
