Delicious Old-Fashioned Homemade Caramels

  1. Generously butter a 9" square baking pan.
  2. Combine butter, brown sugar and salt in a large saucepan.
  3. Stir in corn syrup mixing well to combine.
  4. While stirring constantly, gradually add milk.
  5. Cook over medium heat while stirring constantly until candy thermometer reaches 245 degrees, firm ball stage (or about 15 - 18 minutes).
  6. Add vanilla.
  7. Pour into prepared pan.
  8. Once cool, cut into squares and wrap each piece in wax paper.
  9. Store in an airtight container in a cool place.
