  1. Preheat oven to 350° F.
  2. Grease a glass loaf pan with shortening.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the sugar and margarine.
  4. Beat in the egg and then the dissolved brown sugar water.
  5. Add the baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves until combined.
  6. Add the flour, stirring in the hot water to help with blending.
  7. Pour into prepared pan.
  8. Bake 1 hour until a knife in center comes out clean.
  9. COVER WITH PLASTIC WRAP to avoid drying out.
