"This is a recipe my mother-in-law made every Fall and the whole family loved it. Now that I make it myself, we look forward to having meals where we can use it. It's great on hotdogs and hamburgers."

Original recipe yields 240 servings

  1. Grind all ingredients. Add 1 scant cup salt and let stand over night. Drain in the morning.
  2. Put spices in a bag: 1 Tbsp allspice, 1 Tbsp cloves, 1 Tbsp dry mustard, 1 Tbsp salt, 1 Tbsp cinnamon, 1 Tbsp tumeric.
  3. Boil spices in 2 quarts of vinegar, about 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Add 5 lbs sugar, stirring to dissolve.
  5. Add drained vegetables and cook until done. Taste to see that the vegetables are cooked. Color will also darken.
  6. Process in pint jars in a hot water bath.
