  1. Cream the butter and sugar until light.
  2. Dissolve salt in hot water and mix with rum.
  3. Add baking soda to molasses. (Will double in bulk.)
  4. Sift flour with ginger, clove, nutmeg and allspice.
  5. Add liquid ingredients alternately with flour mixture to the creamed mixture.
  6. Stir well between additions.
  7. Dough will be sticky.
  8. Chill overnight in refrigerator.
  9. In the morning, flour board and rolling pin liberally.
  10. Roll dough out to 1/2-inch thickness.
  11. Cut with large cookie cutter (4" round)
  12. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  13. Place cookies at least three inches apart on sheet.
  14. Bake in 375 degree F oven for 10 to 12 minutes.
  15. Done when edges start to brown and center is firm.
