  1. Mix 3 1/2 cups of the flour, sugar, salt, shortening and yeast in large bowl. Add warm water. Beat on low for 1 minute. Beat on medium for 1 minute. Stir in enough remaining flour, 1 cup at a time, to make dough easy to handle.
  2. Place dough on floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes or until dough is smooth and springy. Place dough in large greased bowl. Roll dough to grease all sides. Cover loosely and let rise in warm place for 40-60 minutes or until it doubles in size.
  3. Tear the bread dough into 5-15 pieces, depending on the size desired. Flatten each piece with your hand, stretching to make it round. Be careful not to tear the bread. Leave a little extra dough around the edges, it does not have to make a perfect circle.
  4. Heat about 1/4 inch. of oil in large frying pan. When oil is heated carefully place 1 piece of bread in oil and fry for about 3 minutes per side or until light golden brown. Be careful not to burn the bread. Drain on paper towels. Serve warm or cold with your favorite toppings.
