"Sour cream lends a mild background tang to this whole-wheat and rye bread. Chickpeas add no discernable taste, but lots of fiber and a light and airy crumb. A dash of red wine vinegar gives this bread great keeping qualities for your breadbox."

  1. Add all but last three ingredients to bread machine, according to manufacturer's directions. Set machine to 2 lb loaf, regular cycle.
  2. If dough is too dry during initial mix, add warm water a bit at a time as necessary, using a spatula to scrape down sides. Dough will appear rather stiff, but there should be no flour sticking to sides of baking box.
  3. Add parsley and flax seeds, if using, at the first beep.
