Grandma's Hawaiian Marinade


"My Grandfather was in the Navy and was stationed in Hawaii. My Grandmother got this recipe from one of her Polynesian neighbors after a neighborhood barbecue. I grew up on this stuff. Similar to Huli Huli Chicken marinade. Great for beef, chicken or pork. This is the basic recipe, we generally add a pinch of dried ginger and a 1/4 tsp of granulated garlic for our taste."

  1. Pour can of tomato sauce in large bowl.
  2. Keep can.
  3. Fill can once with soy sauce, pour in. Repeat.
  4. Fill can halfway with White Distilled vinegar.
  5. Sprinkle crushed red pepper over top.
  6. Mix in onion pieces
  7. Stir until combined.
  8. Reserve 1 cup.
  9. Pour remainder over meat.
  10. Marinate, chilled, for at least 1 hour no more than 8 hours.
  11. Use reserved 1 cup marinade to baste while cooking with sauce.
