  1. Combine dates with 1 cup of water in a saucepan and bring to the boil.
  2. Remove from heat and add in 1 tsp of baking soda.
  3. Leave mixture to cool.
  4. Cream butter, sugar and vanilla with an electic hand mixer until fluffy.
  5. Add in eggs one at a time until well combined.
  6. Stir in flour alternating with date mixture.
  7. Pour into a greased and floured deep 9 inch pie pan.
  8. Bake at 350F for about 40 minutes or until a skewer stuck in the middle of the pudding comes out clean.
  9. Pour a little of the butterscotch sauce over the top of the pudding (how much depends on how "sticky" you like it).
  10. Serve warm with extra butterscotch sauce and fresh whipped cream.
