Mom's Old Fashioned Bread Stuffing

"My mom's recipe for dressing.... We both like it when the bread all meshes together. If you don't like that, reduce the liquid to between 1 and 1 1/2 cups. Use fresh herbs and you will get the best flavor. Enjoy!"

  1. Melt the butter in a pan over medium high heat. Saute the celery for two minutes. Add the onion and bay leaves, and saute for another five minutes, or until onion is translucent but not browned. Add the garlic and saute for one minute, or until fragrant, then remove the pan from heat. Remove the bay leaves. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients (except bay leaves), including those from the pan, and mix together well so everything is incorporated (it will be mushy). Spread the dressing into a casserole dish and bake for 45 minutes. The dressing should be browned on the top , sides and bottom, and "breadlike" on the inside.
