  1. Fry bacon till crisp. Remove bacon from pan, leaving grease. Add butter to bacon drippings. Add beef and brown on all sides. Add onion and apple and cook till onion is transparent.
  2. Add broth, beer, water and salt. Cover and simmer till meat is tender, about two hours.
  3. Forty minutes before end of cooking, add carrots and sausage. Cover pan. Five minutes before end of cooking, add cabbage. Simmer till cabbage is tender.
