"This is a slightly healthier Challah bread recipe with the same great taste. Very easy!! The recipe can be easily cut in half for a medium sized loaf."

  1. 1. Put warm water and yeast in a large bowl. Let dissolve for 5 or so minutes.
  2. 2. Mix in 3 eggs, Splenda/sugar, salt, butter/oil, whole wheat flour, 2 cups all purpose flour, and 1/2 cup rolled oats (I would recommend crushing the oats in your hand first).
  3. 3. Once combined, knead dough on a floured surface for 5-10 minutes.
  4. 4. Place the dough into a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, place in a warm area for approximately 2 hours and let rise to twice its original size.
  5. 5. Cut the dough into 3 or 4 chunks (2 if you've cut this recipe in half - for proper baking) and shape each piece into a strand about 12-16 inches long.
  6. 6. Braid as desired. And place on a baking sheet lined w/ parchment paper and cover w/ a dry towel and let rise for another hour or so (again, the volume should double).
  7. 7. Preheat oven to 350 and glaze the dough with the other beaten egg. Sprinkle with oats, poppy seeds, whatever strikes your fancy, or nothing at all.
  8. 8. Bake in oven for 25-40 minutes (depending on the size/width of your loaf).
