Melt butter. Add egg, sugar, dates and nuts, stir often. Cook until very thick. Add vanilla; remove from heat and add rice krispies. Divide mixture in half. Take 2 pieces of waxed paper, and sprinkle heavily with coconut. Spoon mixture onto waxed paper, add more coconut,and form a log. Wrap tightly; refrigerate for at least 6-8 hours,or until firm. Slice and serve.
