Melt shortening in a skillet and saute onions, peppers and garlic for about 4 minutes. Add ground beef to the same skillet and cook until meat is brown. Add it to the slow cooker, add the rest of the ingredients except the yellow corn meal and water. In a small bowl combine the corn meal and hot water and mix until it's like a paste, then add it to the slow cooker and cook on low for 8 hours or on high for 5 hours.
