Make a Fruit Bouquet

Make it yourself with just a few simple tools. Perfect for Mother's Day, showers, brunches, and more.


A Delicious Idea


When Allrecipes member Kiele Briscoe sent us her idea for making a fresh fruit bouquet, we knew it was a perfect project for the home cook with a can-do attitude.


    Getting Started

    If your vase opening is small, cut pieces off the foam ball with a serrated bread knife so it will fit into the vase. The round ball of foam will give your bouquet a nice shape.

    Fasten the lettuce leaves into the ball with toothpicks to hide all the foam.


      Cutting the Fruit

      The next step is fun and messy. Using the cookie cutters, cut 1-inch slices from the watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, and pineapple. You don't need to peel anything, since you're cutting shapes from the slices.

      Cut out pink hearts from the watermelon and flowers from the cantaloupe, pineapple, and honeydew. Cut little balls out of each fruit with the melon baller to use for centers. Cutting the pineapple is a challenge. You have to push that cutter firmly to cut through the fibrous fruit.

      In addition, cut a lot of skewers in half with scissors, and make half-size skewers out of strawberries, grapes, and various melon balls, to help fill out the bouquet. Core the strawberries so everything will be easy to eat.


      Assembling the Bouquet

      Poke skewers firmly into the foam ball through the lettuce. Space the skewers evenly, putting tall ones towards the back. Fill in with half-size skewers. Thread the cut fruit onto the skewers. Squint, consider, and move a skewer here and a pink heart there, until you are satisfied with the arrangement. Fill in some more fruit as your artistic sense tells you. There are no rules, so have fun!

      It's easier to push the skewers in first and then thread on the fruit, to keep things from falling apart.


        Wowing the Crowd

        Kiele Briscoe, our original submitter, noted you should store the finished bouquet in the refrigerator until it's time to present it. It could take as long as an hour to cut out and assemble all the fruit skewers, so keep the lettuce-covered foam ball and vase in the refrigerator while you make the flowers.

          this sounds great ty i can't wait for me and my grandbabies to make this. i think a short wide glass vase and cutting the bottom off the foam ball so it sits in there nice add the skewers of fruit then fill the dish with colorful jelly beans.

          You might want to remind people to thoroughly wash ALL of the fruit before proceeding. Even though you're not using the rinds of melons, they can harbor nasty pathogens such as salmonella that can find their way into the finished product if you put them on chopping boards.

          I would like to make this for a summer BBQ party. Does anyone know how this will hold up to a temperature of 85 in the shade? I would keep it in the frig until time to serve it but then it will be outside for a few hours. Any guidance and advice is greatly appreciated :>)

          If you’d like to do something extra with this I suggest dipping some of the fruit in chocolate.

          To Kimberly... Maybe setting the vase in a pyrex baking dish and surrounding the vase with ice will help with keeping the fruit a little fresher longer. You could cover the ice with plastic wrap and then some type of drape or cloth napkin to hide it.... hope this helps

          The last time I made this was when my 26-year old had his first birthday; with over 100 guests, it was a huge production and my kitchen floor was sticky after 2 rounds of mopping. This would be fun to try again with the Easter (floral design) cookie cutters at a huge discount!

          For an added twist you may also add a few skewers of cheese cubes with perhaps the grapes randomly.

          I didn't like the lettuce idea either! You could make a watermelon basket by cutting the watermelon, on each ends, and leaving a handle, then scallop the edges with a vegetable peeler! Or, you could cover the foam ball in plastic wrap and put berries on the end of toothpicks! Just and idea!

          I actually did that once, but I colored the bamboo in green food coloring and made strawberry roses popping out of the Watermelon Basket! Then at the bottom of the basket I made melon balls and surrounded the base! This way they could take a melon ball with a toothpick, and eat a strawberry rose! Just remember to score the bottom of the watermelon so it doesn't wobble!

          I made flower bouquets for different functions and as a base I used a pineapple. I've also made bouquets from luncheon meat and olives, pickles etc. Also a seafood one. They are lots of fun

          Instead of using foam ball used a head of lettuce then decorated it with kalle. Like they do with Edible arrangements. Also dipped some of strawberries in chocolate.

          I have made some for showers and they were very well received. They are labor intensive. I cut the fruit, sprinkled a little lemon juice and stored in separate baggies overnight in the fridge to assemble the next morning. I used shredded coconut, dyed green, instead of lettuce.

          For the gal who asked about using something other than lettuce to conceal the foam, here is my suggestion. Cut a melon, like a catelope, in half and plave cut side down on a decorative plate/platter. Then tale a metal skewer and poke several holes where you wish to place the wooden skewers in. You may then decoarte the base of the melon with grapes or any other fruit

          I've used either color of cabbage placed in a bowl as a base.(Trim the base of the cappage, with the bottom down) Save your hands and poke the holes with an awl, then insert the skewers.

          To enlarge the pictures: Edit, copy, - edit paste on to an e-mail or a word document. Click on each picture to enlarged (you'll notice six white boxes on the edges of each photograph, then you can pull the boxes to enlarge) although the pictures when made larger aren't as crisp. Then e-mail it to yourself, or the word document saved to recipe file you've made. Also you can then print either.

          We went to a wine and cheese tasting where they made these edible bouquets using a small cantaloupe as the base. That seemed to work really well and the fruit stayed fresh at room temperature during the whole event.

          You can use homemade playdough in the bottom instead of lettuce.

          I have made these several times using a flower pot for kid's birthdays. As far as the lettuce, it shouldn't show that much if you have enough fruit and helps skewers stick. Everyone loved it, including teens. I put stickers on the outside of the pot. For watermelon (baby shower), made a baby buggy with 3/4 watermelon (carraige and top of buggy, scooped it out and made a handle, put lace around outside, leveled bottom, laid it on ice, and put fruit on toothpicks inside, used fruit to be dipped into a chocolate fountain
