Homemade is Money Saved: Packaged Foods

Why spend money on pre-packaged food when you can make your favorites at home for a fraction of the price?

These homemade treats taste just like, if not better, than convenience items you'd find in the grocery store. But don't take our word for it--check out the rave reviews from Allrecipes Community Members!

Lemon Poppy Seed Loaf

Submitted By: IRENED

Rave Review: "I used lemon yogurt instead of plain, and since I hate zesting lemons and was in a hurry I used one tablespoon of lemon extract in with the yogurt and lemon juice. I also added a few drops of yellow food coloring because the batter was not yellow at all, and it came out great--just like you buy at the store, but better!"

Golden Sweet Cornbread

Submitted By: bluegirl

Rave Review: "Just this week alone I've already made this twice! It is a hit in my family! No more Jiffy for me! Last night I served it with some pinto beans and I have none left. Thanks--and the recipe is really easy!"

Grandmother's Buttermilk Cornbread

Rave Review: "This is the first time I have ever made cornbread from scratch; I usually just mix up some Jiffy, but never again! This was the best cornbread I have ever tasted and I can't believe I did it from scratch. I didn't change a single thing and it was absolutely wonderful. I prefer my cornbread sweet and this was perfect. A definite five-star keeper! BETHANYWEATHERSBY, thank you so much for such an outstanding recipe!"

Corn Dog Muffins

Submitted By: TINA3031

Rave Review: "These were fantastic; actually, I'm eating one while I write this! I will never buy frozen corn dogs again! These are so yummy and cheap to make! Compared to a package of frozen corn dogs which run about $10, this probably cost not much more than $2. I'm going to freeze the leftovers and reheat them for snacks."

Oatmeal Apricot Squares

Submitted By: Veronica Roza

Rave Review: "The day I made this I never realized just how popular it would become. Apparently it's the type of food that doesn't last long anywhere except in my family members' stomachs. Now my mom is hooked and stopped buying breakfast bars."

Microwave Popcorn

Submitted By: ACONTORER

Rave Review: "Not only is this recipe easy and economical, it makes excellent popcorn! I've gotten many rave reviews from others who want to know my "secret." Additionally, I feel good about serving this wholesome version of popcorn to my family and avoiding the chemicals in microwave store-bought popcorn. Thanks so much for this wonderful recipe."

Baked Potato Soup V

Submitted By: TLNATION

Rave Review: "Loved it! Tasted like Bob Evans baked potato soup that I like so much--will make again."

Sloppy Joes II

Submitted By: Tamara

Rave Review: "Better than Manwich! I used a little less ketchup and a little less meat. I will definitely make this recipe again!"

Taco Seasoning I

Submitted By: BILL ECHOLS

Rave Review: "Ran out of taco seasoning while cooking and found this to mix up and add to the dish. Made some more for a couple of extra meals and put in a small Tupperware in the spice drawer. Never going back to the packs!"

Chili Seasoning Mix II

Submitted By: Sal

Rave Review: "Delicious! I'll never buy that packaged stuff again. I only used two tablespoons of flour and increased the chili powder to one tablespoon. Oh, and I didn't have minced dried garlic, so I used a teaspoon of garlic powder--no idea if that's equivalent, but it tasted good! Thanks for the great recipe!"

In-a-Pinch Ketchup

Submitted By: outnumbered

Rave Review: "Fantastic! I make this now instead of buying ketchup. It's cheap and free of high fructose corn syrup! Great!"

Could anyone tell me the best way to store/freeze homemade bread.Kate

I've recently started making enough bread to freeze ahead. I've bee slicing it and double wrapping it as tight as I can. It's holding up for a week or two, but that's all the longer it has stayed in the freezer before we use it. Hope that helps:?)

Wrap in freezer paper-it's the best! Put it in freezer as soon as it's completely cooled for best results.

how to thaw out hamburger and not have it smell or turn brown?

Thawing meats should be done in the refrigerator or under cold water. Make sure to put it in the fridge the night before to allow time to thaw.
