Homemade is Money Saved: Fast Food Favorites

Why spend money on fast food when you can make your favorites at home for a fraction of the price?

These homemade treats taste just like, if not better, than those foods you tend to buy on the fly. But don't take our word for it--check out the rave reviews from Allrecipes Community Members!

Orange Glorious I

Submitted By: BROOKER57

Rave Review: "My husband loved it--he drank the whole thing by himself. I just used half of a 12-ounce frozen orange juice container and saved the rest for next time. I made it exactly as written and he said it tasted just like the drink you get from the mall. Now we can make it at home for less than half the price and not spend the gas to drive to the mall! Thanks, will definitely make again."

Kettle Corn

Submitted By: SUE202

Rave Review: "This was awesome! I made three batches over the weekend. Here is my technique (thanks to all the previous reviewers for the tips): Put oil and three popcorn kernels in the pan. Heat the oil--when all three kernels pop, you are ready to go. Add the kernels and the sugar at the same time. Leave the pan on the stove for three seconds, then pick the pan up and shake it for three seconds. Repeat until corn is popped. Pour the popped corn into a big bowl and immediately sprinkle one teaspoon of table salt over it and gently toss. (Be careful though--the syrupy coating on the corn is hot!) The salt is absolutely necessary to get the authentic sweet-and-salty kettle corn taste! Really, really good stuff. I was surprised that this tasted just like the stuff you buy at fairs, etc., and it is much cheaper."

B and L's Strawberry Smoothie

Submitted By: Lisa and Brittany

Rave Review: "We made it exactly as it said but I did do one thing differently so that I didn't have to use ice--I froze my strawberries too and it was as delicious as buying one from Juice-It-Up or another smoothie place! Thick and yummy! If it is too thick for you, add more milk; if it's not thick enough, add the milk a little at a time until you get your desired thickness. I will definitely make this again...and I have found a new use for frozen fruit! One more thing...I had a nectarine that was getting too ripe so I cut it up and froze it and used it another day in this smoothie! Great job!"

Clone of a Cinnabon

Submitted By: Marsha Fernandez

Rave Review: "These tasted wonderful and looked amazing! These may even be better than Cinnabons, they were definitely more gooey and soft which is how I prefer my cinnamon rolls. This is definitely a keeper, I love this recipe! Thank you so much for sharing!"

This is wonderful. I have been implementing this concept for a many years now. I do not enjoy eating out very much, and of course when I find that favorite restaurant, I am always successful in preparing the dish that I've had at home with no problem. I have the gift of recognizing the spices/seasoning and will make the same dish immediately. It is always more reward to implement the dish in the comfort of my own kitchen. Without a doubt it is healthier, safer and more cost effective to prepare your own restaurant style meals at home. Try it you friends and family will love them. Get recipes posted here.

Normally those dishes are the ones I would prepare more often.

I do almost all home cooked foods, including fast foods - kitchen burritos, sloppy joes, mini pizzas, and freeze these in individual packets in 1-gallon labeled freezer bags; My teenager and friends just reheat them in the microwave whenever they want a snack. I also make and freeze pasta sauce, taco sauce, and apple sauce. Once you start, you'll discover just how easy it is to prepare many favorite foods at home. Home cooking is the best - as well as the least expensive.
