Day of the Dead

Celebrate Día de los Muertos

In Mexico and other parts of the world, families celebrate and honor the lives of their loved ones and ancestors on the first and second days of November.

Bread of the Dead

Families bring orange marigolds and gifts of fruits, skull-shaped candies, liquor and wines to gravesites. One of the most common offerings is a sweet yeast bread called Pan de Muertos. Often the loaves are oval or round and topped with bone shapes.

Since Pan de Muertos is an enriched bread--made with butter, sugar, and eggs--it will take longer to rise than lean doughs. See Baking Yeast Breads for more tips.

Mexican Night

Whether you're heading to the cemetery on All Souls' Day or are staying indoors, warm spirits with a Mexican meal.

This holiday is not only Mexican, but Catholic it seems. Everything here in Italy even closed on Nov 2 in it's honor.

Thank you for sharing the Mexican customs and recipes for this celebration on this website. Maybe you can feature other ethnic recipes for this celebration next year! We might all get an education on this ancient tradition that we call "the day of the dead" and celebrate it with a light spirit (no pun intended).

All Saint's Day - November 1 is a Catholic holiday or celebration of those who have "gone before" We celebrate their lives with remembrance of their lives. Usually involves their favorite food and drink. I was taught that Hallowe'en was All Hallows Eve - night before All Saint's Day.
