Traditional soda bread without the 'extra' ingredients

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease & flour baking sheet.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together flour, baking soda and salt. Add buttermilk to make it sticky. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead slightly. Form dough into a round and place on prepared baking sheet. Flatten it to about 1 1/2 to 2" high. Cut a deep cross into middle of round w/sharp knife dipped in flour.
  3. Bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes, then lower heat to 350 and bake for 15 minutes. Let bread cool for two hours before cutting and eating.
