Known for Deception Pass and the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, Oak Harbor was settled by Dutch farmers, and still retains much of that small town heritage. Though made more suburban by the influx of the naval community, much of Oak Harbor is still surrounded by farms, and there are a surprising number of roadside produce and fruit stands available during the summer. Deception Pass State Park, situated at the very north end of the island, is the largest tourist attraction in the area, with more than 2 million visitors per year. The views from the park and the bridge are quite extraordinary, and well worth the traffic in summertime.The local Dutch heritage creates a strange mix with the Naval Air Station—one local park features both a windmill and a navy jet. At the yearly “Holland Happening” festival, the navy’s presence is felt through some of the international cuisine available, as lumpia and adobo from the Philippines can be found alongside Dutch cookies such as stroopwafels and speculaas.

About me:
My mom started me cooking when I was about 4 years old, probably to keep me away from the oven or tripping her in the kitchen. She would hand me a ball of dough and have me roll it out to make 'bumble bees' for dessert. Rolled pie dough with melted butter and cinnamon sugar sprinkled over it then rolled up and sliced into 1 inch pieces. Baked in the oven til brown after the pie she made came out.
