the buzz

Hungary is the birthplace of one of the most popular toys in history: the Rubik’s Cube. The land-locked country located in central Europe also is largely responsible for the popularization of paprika and the dish we call ‘goulash.’ Ironically, the dish we call ‘goulash’ is not the traditional Hungarian dish called ‘gulyas.’ Gulyas is a hearty beef and vegetable soup that was a long-time staple among Hungarian herdsmen. What we refer to as ‘goulash’ is actually another Hungarian dish called ‘Porkolt’ -- beef and potatoes stewed in beef stock with sour cream and tomato paste and seasoned generously with paprika. It is often served with noodles. It would be a shame to be limited to these dishes, however, when talking about Hungarian cuisine. Csirkepaprikas (Chicken Paprikash), Kolbasz (paprika-seasoned sausage), Pecsenye (pork steak with cabbage), and Palacsinta (stuffed pancakes) all enjoy popularity among Hungarians.
