White Chocolate Cheesecake with White Chocolate Brandy Sauce

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2009
I read a lot of the reviews before deciding on this cheesecake for Christmas dinner dessert, but opted to make it exactly as the recipe says for my first time making it. It was good, and I would make again in the future, but I did have some comments that the white chocolate was all but undetectable, and I think a graham crumb crust would be an improvement. Also, even though I baked in a water bath, and it came out of the oven nice and smooth and creamy looking, after about a half hour of sitting on the counter cooling, a huge crack developed in the middle. The crack got bigger and bigger while it was refrigerating overnight. I'm not sure why this is, but since there don't seem to be other reviews mentioning this, I'm sure it's not the fault of the recipe.

Ukrainian Olha's Varenyky (Perogies)

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2009
Almost, but not quite, the perfect Varenyky. I have made them for 3 years now, and would suggest the following filling changes: boil the potatoes in the skins and then peel them, mash the potatoes rather than dicing, and add a dash of nutmeg to the filling to enhance the cheese flavour. As for the dough, I found it a bit tougher when cooked than the varenyky I grew up with. Search for an online recipe with fewer eggs, sour cream and butter in the dough; the sour cream seems to make the dough much more workable and tender. Also, after boiling varenyky it seems to help to subsequently cook them even more, either re-heating them in a casserole dish in the oven, or frying them in a pan with a bit of butter an onion. This helps to make them even more tender. This is great logistically when you want to prepare the varenyky well before a meal but re-heat them to serve.

Bacon Cheddar Deviled Eggs

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2009
These are fantastic. I used honey mustard instead of regular prepared mustard and some finely chopped green onions. I used microwave ready bacon which was the perfect texture. Everyone loved them. And, not a single egg was left.

Sauteed Swiss Chard with Parmesan Cheese

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2009
I have never cooked swiss chard before and because of this recipe it will be a staple in future. Wow...tasty and so good for you! I will cut down on the fats in future to make it more healthy as I don't see any need for 4 tbsps of oil and butter for it to work out.

Grandpere dans le Sirop

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2009
not so bad. It did come out way too doughy and white on top which was not appealing at all. I put it in the oven uncovered for a few minutes and it made all the difference! Nice and golden, it stuck hard to the pan though. They did enjoy it after I broiled it, so I would suggest broiling the top b4 serving.

Canadian Molasses Cookies

These cookies were all right. I added fresh grated ginger and liked the taste. Other than that, I found that my cookies spread out to be thin and really chewy even though I baked them on parchment paper.

Cinnamon Raisin Bread I

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2009
Fabulous bread and easy to make. It makes three good sized loaves. Make sure to watch your cooking time. I made the mistake of setting the timer for the full and not checking my bread until it went off. My bread turned out to be a little browner than I would have liked.

Apple Pie by Grandma Ople

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2009
One of the best apple pies I have ever made!! I agree that adding the syrup to the apple before piling them in the crust is a must. Also adding some cinnamon and vanilla to the syrup as it's cooking is a great idea.

Sweet and Sour Meatballs II

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2009
This will now be my go to meatball recipe! I did bake the meatballs rather than fry them. Oven set at at 350* for approxinmately 30 minutes depending on size. As for the sauce, it received rave reviews from our guests. No changes needed here. Thanks Cathy! Fantastic!!

Grandma's Green Bean Casserole

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2009
This recipe is the BOMB! So much better than the mushroom soup version. I made a few minor changes such as using frozen cut green beans, cooked the diced onion till translucent, and added half of the Cheddar cheese to the green bean mixture. When the casserole was almost cooked, I added the cracker crumbs, rest of the cheddar, and french fried onion rings till the cheese had melted. Delicious! Thanks for the fantastic recipe, Amy. Definitely a keeper.

Homestyle Turkey, the Michigander Way

Wow - I made this turkey for Christmas dinner and it was fantastic - received rave reviews from all! I followed the recipe exactly and not only was the turkey moist and delicous - the gravy was absolutely fantastic. If I'm roasting a turkey, this is the only way I will make it!

Grilled Whole Turkey

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2009
This recipe receives 5 stars from me because it is delicious and ridiculosly easy! I did not use the bouillon/spices noted in the recipe, I just put it in a pan and grilled it for Christmas dinner (oven space is at a premium on Christmas day!). I did brine the turkey first (which is why i did not use the bouillon/spices) and the end result was a bird that cooked in just over 2 hours (11.5 lb turkey) and was very delicious - I received rave reviews from all!

Campbell's® Green Bean Casserole

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2009
I made this for Christmas dinner yesterday and it was pretty ho-hum. Not a flavor explosion at all. I followed the recipe exactly with the exception of using 1/2 the milk called for; I did this based on other reviews of the sauce being too thin. The end result was ok - but nothing spectacular at all.

Squash Braid

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2009
A great idea to serve a more savory bread to compliment a Christmas turkey dinner. It didn't go over as well as I expected. The very yellow colour and too soft crust are what I didn't care for. I would liken the texture to that of a croissant. The dough was very easy to work with and the actual bread texture was quite good. I baked it in a round shape and served it with pats of both sage and whipped butter. I'll save most of it to hopefully make a good toast. I may look around to improve this bread or opt for another recipe. Thanks anyway.

This recipe was great! However, I added one change: I mixed 3/4 cup of Italian style bread crumbs and 1 tbsp. of melted margarine with a fork and sprinkled it on top of the casserole.

Easy Turkey Gravy

Found this extremely easy and quick to make. Family have asked that this be the new family favourite. I followed the recipe to the "T" and turned out famously. After the second "boiling", and letting it simmer, was quick thick and flavourful.

Quick and Easy Yorkshire Pudding

Reviewed: Dec. 25, 2009
These turned out wonderfully for our Christmas dinner today. Thank you! I have read some of the negative reviews and can only assume those people have not tried yorkshire pudding before - they are supposed to be golden and crispy on the outside and somewhat moist and eggy on the inside, with an empty space in the centre to pour in the gravy. So yorkshire pudding newbies, consider yourself warned -- yorkshire puddings taste eggy!

Chewy Peanut Butter Brownies

Reviewed: Dec. 25, 2009
Very nice, but perhaps I should add more PB and less butter (I also use 'no added salt, no added sugar' PB). We all like them. I added Choc Chips to a batch, that was a good idea. REALLY decadent cut in small slices and served (with fruit) with the 'EAGLE BRAND® Chocolate Fondue' from this site.
