Biscuit Baking Mix

Reviewed: Nov. 7, 2011
A good ratio of ingredients, producing light, tender and flavorful results. This is a perfect alternative to store bought mix if you are looking to eliminate as many preservatives in your diet as possible.

Pumpkin Pie Squares

Reviewed: Nov. 7, 2011
I made this into tarts as there was no way the crust mixture was going to be enough for a 9x13 pan. As it happens, the recipe divided between 24 muffin cups was perfect. I just found the overall result rather bland, especially the crust, which was heavy and flavorless. I think I'll stick to the always rich and flavorful traditional pumpkin pie.

Monkey Bread with a Twist

Reviewed: Oct. 31, 2011
I added this to a brunch buffet, specifically for the kids, but it was popular with everyone. I would recommend cutting down on the sugar/cinnamon mixture as it makes more than necessary, otherwise change nothing. I took the hint from another reviewer and covered loosely with foil near the end of baking. A great addition would be chopped walnuts or pecans if allergies aren't a problem.

All-Day Apple Butter

Reviewed: Oct. 30, 2011
Totally worth the wait, for sure. Plan on it taking much longer than suggested though, especially when it comes to reducing it at step 4. Mine took several hours to reduce (and my slow cooker boils even on low). It's ready when there is no visible liquid. I increased the spices by double and used only 1 cup of honey with sweet orchard run Gala apples. As the submitter suggests, the amount of sweetener used depends on the apples you use. My results were quite sweet but still pleasantly tangy.

Apple Squares

Reviewed: Oct. 30, 2011
These were actually really very good - kind of like a cross between a cookie and a brownie, with a very crispy crust and a very chewy center. I topped the bars with a light drizzle of maple glaze. I would leave off the cinnamon sugar 'streusel' which is a little redundant with this recipe, and go with a glaze instead, which also makes them look pretty. I would also double the recipe and bake it in a 9x13 pan next time as they disappear quickly. Thanks for the recipe.

Mom's Paprika Chicken with Potatoes

Reviewed: Oct. 29, 2011
I increased the seasonings only, after reading the submitters comments. I also added in some of my own sodium free garlic herb seasoning blend along with the paprika and garlic. Absolutely season this to your tastes. We found it very flavorful. Very easy and not a labor intensive meal to prepare, all of which means I'll be making this again sometime.

Mom's Buttermilk Pancakes

Reviewed: Oct. 28, 2011
Very light and fluffy. I followed the recipe to the letter this first time, using 1% buttermilk. I would reduce the salt next time though, as it was very noticeable.

Pumpkin Bars I

Reviewed: Oct. 28, 2011
These bars are light textured, moist and lightly spiced with great pumpkin flavor. They were also very popular. I like that this is a one bowl recipe which makes for very easy cleanup, although I did cream the shortening first before adding the rest of the ingredients. I also added a teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice to the cream cheese frosting I made to top, which complemented the cake beautifully.

Beth's Spicy Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 23, 2011
Follow the recipe as written. These are great cookies. As directed...do not over bake. Watch carefully and check them starting at about 8 or 9 minutes rather than just set the timer for 10 to 12. They may very well over bake and this five star cookie becomes a 1 star cookie. If over baked the flavor and wonderful chewy texture is lost. Also, soak the raisins first. Makes a world of difference.

Simple and delicious. I would recommend doubling ingredients for the gravy though.

Crunchy Country Chicken with Creamy Gravy

Reviewed: Oct. 17, 2011
This was a hit with the whole family. Very flavorful, between the coating for the chicken and the delicious gravy. Made a warm and filling 'comfort food' dinner. Thanks, ElCay!

Pumpkin French Toast Bake

Reviewed: Oct. 15, 2011
This was a really great addition to a brunch menu. It was perfectly spiced and not too sweet, but just sweet enough to not need syrup. The crumb topping is an extra special touch. I found I liked it best with just a dollop of fresh whipped cream to complement the spicy pumpkin flavor. I didn't have Texas toast and substituted a loaf of regular sandwich bread, which when cubed equaled about 8 cups. I also took the crusts off first. The only minor issue was with mixing everything in the baking dish - that caused it to stick to the dish. I would recommend stirring the pumpkin mixture in a large bowl and adding the bread cubes to the bowl to mix, then pouring it all in the baking pan.

Homemade Butter

Reviewed: Oct. 11, 2011
I have been finding a lot of great home made alternatives on here for products I would normally purchase store bought, and this one hits in the top five of my favorites~ I never would have even thought of doing it if not for the 'recipe' here. One of the many reasons I love AR. It was so easy. I just used my f.p. and then pressed the butter into a cheesecloth lined sieve to extract the buttermilk (which was a pleasant bonus!). It may or may not be economical depending on the cost of your cream versus a pound of butter, but the taste alone is worth it!

Butterscotch Gingerbread Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2011
Wonderful, full flavored cookie ~ chewy inside and crispy on the outside. One thing I would recommend though is reducing the butterscotch chips. I only put in the 8 oz I had left in the bag and it was more than enough. Any more, and the butterscotch flavor would be overpowering and the cookie most likely way too sweet.

Spaghetti Sauce Mix

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2011
This made the best spaghetti dinner ever. Rich and saucy with a very robust flavor. The best part ~ no puddle of tomato-y liquid pooling under the noodles. I made the recipe as written, but used slightly less water when it came to following the directions for making the sauce. This will be my go to recipe from now on.

Sweet Baked Onion Rings

Reviewed: Oct. 8, 2011
I think these are just too much work for a so-so outcome. Definitely good for a baked ring as opposed to fried, but just not really worth it to me. The coating was really crispy, almost too crispy ~ making them hard to eat without tearing up your mouth, and I found the flavor lacking overall. The taste of the onions were lost beneath the coating.

Perfect cookie for a fall day with a hot cup of tea. I made a 'pumpkin pie' version using pumpkin butter and pumpkin pie spice. Fun variation on shortbread, Avon~thanks!

Lemon Chewy Crisps

Delightful cookies. Crisp and chewy as promised with wonderful lemon flavor. Best eaten quickly and not stored - I found they lost their crispness quite quickly and went very soft.

Kathleen’s Toasted Ravioli with Basil Cream Sauce

Reviewed: Sep. 29, 2011
These were so good, Kathleen. I wanted kid friendly finger food for a family movie night, and my kids *loved* these. I knew they wouldn't go for the basil sauce, so I made a marinara instead. I will wait for an opportunity to make the basil cream as it sounds delicious. Easy, quick, fun, yummy and kid friendly - makes these a hit for us. Thanks for sharing your recipe.,
