Whole Wheat Honey Bread

Reviewed: Feb. 1, 2012
I followed this recipe except for using butter for the shortening. Some whole wheat recipes can be either super dry and dense or just too light and insubstantial ~ this one struck a perfect balance. I found it to be moist, tender and light but with just the right balance of heartiness. The honey gives it just a touch of sweetness and great color. It's great toasted and for sandwiches.

Groovy Green Smoothie

Reviewed: Feb. 1, 2012
You really can't taste the spinach in this! Who knew? I had to make a few fruit subs, such as kiwi for grapes and strawberries for the apple. I think I would use a frozen banana to make it a little more refreshing, but that's about it. Fantastic.

Butterscotch Oatmeal

Reviewed: Jan. 30, 2012
Super sweet, even for this 'sweet tooth'. I would suggest starting with half the sugar. Also, boiling as directed will curdle the egg. The mixture only needs to be heated (on medium low heat) until thickened, then add the oats.

Honey Wheat Sandwich Rolls

Excellent recipe. I changed nothing and nothing needs changing! Flavorful, soft, tender, chewy. Just delicious. These rolls were still fresh tasting the next day as well.

Jan's Pretzel Dogs

Reviewed: Jan. 25, 2012
Jan, you are a wizard of all things yeast. This is another great recipe! I followed everything to a 't' and had no problems at all. These are so easy to make it's unbelievable. I'm going to make more to put in the freezer for handy lunches. I only had 12 dogs, so I made pretzel bites out of the excess dough ~ the taste and texture was EXACTLY as a soft pretzel should be. Classic.

Banana, Chocolate, and Almond Breakfast Oatmeal

Reviewed: Jan. 23, 2012
I would make a few changes to this recipe as I found it quite rich and sweet. The almond flavoring also put it a bit over the top. I'd replace that with vanilla extract and reduce the sugar (how much you use depends on the ripeness of your banana) and cocoa. I would also use toasted almonds. This could possibly be a good way to get oatmeal into my kids, so I'll try it out on them. Thanks for the recipe!

Italian Pinwheel Rolls

Reviewed: Jan. 14, 2012
Increasing the butter to 2 tablespoons makes the resulting buns much more tender and not as dry as some complained of. 1.5 teaspoons isn't enough to make a difference. My dough was quite sticky as reviewers also mentioned, but it's normal to have to adjust the flour a bit ~ I usually add in a tbs at a time until it feels just right, which was necessary in this case. I spread 1/4 cup of pizza sauce on the dough instead of softened butter to turn these into pizza buns. 6 cloves of garlic is excessive unless you are a garlic fanatic. I knew my kids would take issue with that amount so to keep it simple I just sprinkled on a little garlic powder instead. These ended up being very tender and flavorful buns. Turning them into pizza pinwheels made them a great (and popular!) snack and lunchbox item for my kids, so I think I'll be making these often.

Thanks for posting, Shearone. I made these today after seeing your weblink, and they were a hit with my kids and their friends. Always nice to have another popular treat to pull out when needed! Especially nice to have a good use for that extra buttermilk I always seem to have. Thanks again.

Brie’s Banana and Honey Dog Treats

Reviewed: Jan. 7, 2012
First off, thank you for sharing this recipe as my dog loves them and I was specifically looking for something with banana in it. I did have a lot of trouble with the dough as it was super wet and sticky. Not sure why, perhaps different climate conditions have something to do with it? I ended up adding another 2 cups of flour by the time I was finished. It yielded easily 75 large biscuits (for my big Bernese girl!) and still ended up cutting out an additional tray of mini biscuits. Sooo, I think I'll just cut the recipe in half next time and add in an extra cup of flour right off the bat, then knead in extra as needed. These are a great, healthy home made dog treat. Thanks, apple! I can't wait to try the others you have posted.

Tangy Buttermilk Cheese Bread

Reviewed: Jan. 6, 2012
Great flavor. Light and tender with a beautifully crisp crust. Just delicious. The only deviation I made from the recipe was warming the buttermilk to 90 degrees first. I used 1% buttermilk and full fat cheese.

Chicken and Gnocchi Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 4, 2012
This was one of the best soups I've had in a long time too, Christina! I saw someone on the buzz mention using leftover turkey and broth in this recipe - I had an 'aha' moment and dinner was born, thanks to the idea and all my turkey leftovers. It was brilliant. I will say though, that I will try a different brand of gnocchi next time, or just make my own dumplings. The brand I bought was not great and really distracted from the rest of the soup.

A great way to use up leftover cranberry sauce (mine was homemade though). The sauce was terrific, and so easy.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2012
I used some white chocolate as well to decorate mine like tuxedo's. They were so cute for N.Y.'s eve and made a great impression. I think overall, that I prefer a ganache coating on strawberries, flavor wise and for other reasons. Don't make these too far ahead as the sugar reacts with the berry, which begins to change the flavor and cause 'weeping'. Best quality, fresh berries are a must.

The Milky Way Martini

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2012
We sampled two different chocolate martini's for a chocolate themed party, and this was the hand's down favorite. It's powerful, so I think just a taste is the best way to enjoy. We made the full servings but split them between more people. A very 'chocolatey' martini, creamy and sweet. The chocolate drizzle made a very pretty presentation.

Chocolate Martini a la Laren

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2012
This is a classic, simple chocolate martini. I used Van Gogh chocolate vodka and Godiva white chocolate liqueur. Very sublime and goes down easy. Drizzle some chocolate syrup in the glass first as it makes a very pretty presentation. The grated chocolate garnish was a nice finish.

Too Much Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2012
After reading some of the reviews, I took Naples34102's advice and added vanilla extract and used strong brewed coffee for the water. I also used mini chips as many others did. I followed everything else as written, including the baking instructions, which were spot on. Don't ignore the directive to let the cake cool completely in the pan as it's structure is very soft and moist when warm. The cake was quite chocolatey, but not too sweet or rich. It could take a chocolate glaze, but I went with powdered sugar sifted over the top. I would make this again as I enjoyed it and everyone else raved over it.

Ranch Pretzels and Goldfish

I'm so sorry, but these didn't have any wow factor at all. They didn't taste much different than pretzels and fish crackers. Not much trouble to make, but not worth the effort for me.

Dried Cherry and Cranberry Sauce

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2011
This is really a lovely recipe! The subtle layering of flavors and the perfect contrast between sweet and tart were heavenly. This will be replacing my nice, but boring old standard recipe. I followed to the letter however, must admit to using a black cherry/cranberry juice blend I found. My only, slight, issue with this recipe is it was a tad 'loose' so I would reduce the juice accordingly next time to allow the sauce to gel a bit thicker. Thank you so much for sharing this gem!
