First, let me say I love this site.  I like seeing the photos and reading about fellow AR members and checking out the reviews of recipes I may be interested in making.  Which leads me to my topic today...rules of the road for reviews according to wisweetp.   Above all, don't be nasty.  You… MORE

I had a privileged childhood.  Oh, we weren't by any means least not in monetary terms.  But I had a family who gardened and took full advantage of that garden to preserve the bounty for winter.  We had apple, pear, and persimmon trees in the yard, and a sizeable strawberry patch… MORE

Hello, my name is wisweetp, and I am a pizzaholic.   I'm not sure how--or when--it really happened.  I've always loved pizza.  As a kid growing up in rural Mississippi, I ate the frozen Totino's and thought they were the greatest thing under the sun (no pizza parlors in the area then).  College… MORE

Ok, time for a confession.  I have, unfortunately, slid backwards on my vegan/vegetarian experiment.  I had a business trip to Atlanta at the first of February and was unable to follow my plan during the daytime.  Then I came home and woke up the next day with an upper… MORE

Well, it's now a month into my plan to eat vegan and/or vegetarian.  I also continue to do interval training on the treadmill.  There've been some hits and misses along the way.  Fortunately, more of the former than the latter.  I still can't develop a taste for soy milk or tofu, but I… MORE

I've spent a lot of time over the past couple of months researching and gathering information on a vegan diet.  My vegan experiment is in full swing now.  Although I'm not a full-time vegan, I am following a mostly vegan diet lately.  When I'm not doing the vegan thing, it's mostly vegetarian. MORE

It comes to this.  For half my life, I've battled the bulge.  I am now 45 and am heavier than I've ever been.  My husband and I follow a pretty healthy lifestyle.  We try to stay active (tennis in summer; weights, treadmill, and yoga in the winter), and we eschew processed foods in favor… MORE

Calling all AR members..... What is your favorite recipe to cook?  Is it your favorite dish or one that you just find fun to cook even if it's not your favorite to eat?  It's probably reasonably safe to assume that most everyone here likes to cook.  If you do and you have a specialty,… MORE

A few weeks ago, I posted a blog asking "what do you feed your picky teenager?".  My husband's 14 1/2 year old son has tastes that lean heavily towards fast food and processed meals loaded with sodium and preservatives.  I received some good suggestions...thank you to all who… MORE

I love this time of year with all the fresh veggies starting to come into the farmer's market!  Saturday morning, I'm up early and headed with bags in tow for my weekly shopping trip.  It's so much fun to see what's new each week, and my meal planning starts while I'm there.  This… MORE

About Me
I'm a born and bred Southerner now living in the Midwest (temporarily!). I learned to cook by watching and helping my grandmother and great-grandmother, both of whom were wonderful Southern cooks who cooked by "feel" rather than by measuring. And that's how I cook now, too. Recipes are more of a suggestion than instruction for me. I love to garden and use my fresh veggies in my creations, especially salsa and hot sauce, which are my specialties.
My favorite things to cook
Baked goods (especially yeast breads), soups, pizza, roasted and grilled veggies...
My favorite family cooking traditions
Christmas candy making with my mom. She lives across the country now, so we haven't been able to do that since I moved..better on the waistlines!
My cooking triumphs
Planning an outdoor party for 20 people where the main course and the main side dish were to be grilled. It was POURING when the time came. I moved everything inside and prepared the food on stovetop and oven, and it turned out beautifully anyway.
My cooking tragedies
Making biscuits at my mom's house one time and accidentally using plain flour instead of self-rising. Needless to say, I had to make another batch of biscuits when I realized what I had done! Otherwise, I've been pretty lucky!
