I am in the middle of a full-blown love affair.  So is my husband.  And it's not with each other.  We are still very much in love after 9 years together, but we have a new object of affection...a Vitamix!  I have been perusing the Vitamix models for several years now but could not bring… MORE

If you watched Sesame Street as a kid, you'll instantly recognize my opening line.  Today, it's about food, of course.   I am a confirmed foodie.  I love to cook, I love to eat, I watch food shows all the time, and I read cookbooks like novels.  My collection has outgrown space after space… MORE

As the song goes.  I actually DON'T like spiders at all (I know, they eat insects, they serve a purpose, etc, etc, etc.) but I STILL don't like them.  Snakes...well, I'm ok with them as long as we both understand our boundaries.  I'm far less likely to encounter a snake than a spider, so I'll… MORE

Food civil wars:  I'm not entirely sure it's always so civil in these wars.  In reading reviews, from time to time I run across comments that go something like this... "this is NOT authentic (insert your dish name here)!  It never contains (insert ingredient name here)!"  So what does… MORE

"Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow?" as the nursery rhyme goes.  Well, in wisweetp land, the garden grows quite well this year!  We've had a very unusual summer for Wisconsin.  Many times I've felt  more like I was back in the Deep South.  Triple digits and days in the… MORE

I learned to cook at my great grandmother's and my grandmother's knee...both excellent cooks.  And both cooked by feel.  "Cooking is a science", so say some of the experts.  Well, I respectfully have to disagree.  I think cooking is an intuitive process, and once you've been doing it long… MORE

For years, I've been working on Gumbo, refining my ingredients and techniques as I learn and gain experience.  I've been cooking for at least 35 years, but I learn more every day.  I make good Gumbo.  I think that I do, and everyone who tries my gumbo tells me the same.  But it's never been… MORE

There are 9 cupcakes in my kitchen right now.  I made them for St Patrick's Day for the family.  Chocolate Stout Cupcakes.  And you know what?  They've been here for 3 days.  I've had 1/2 of a cupcake.  I don't even want any more of them.  My husband and his son will finish them, no doubt. … MORE

I'm going to lose 35% of my body weight in the next 2 years.  There, I've said it!  It doesn't matter if 1 person reads this or 100 people read this.  I've put it out there, and that's a step towards complete commitment to this goal.  I am 47 years old, and I am obsese.  Believe me, that… MORE

My goal over the last year, especially, is to significantly increase my (and the family's) intake of vegetables.  This has proven to be quite easy for me but a bit more of a challenge for the family.  My DH loves veggies, but he's somewhat of a product of his environment both from a climate… MORE

About Me
I'm a born and bred Southerner now living in the Midwest (temporarily!). I learned to cook by watching and helping my grandmother and great-grandmother, both of whom were wonderful Southern cooks who cooked by "feel" rather than by measuring. And that's how I cook now, too. Recipes are more of a suggestion than instruction for me. I love to garden and use my fresh veggies in my creations, especially salsa and hot sauce, which are my specialties.
My favorite things to cook
Baked goods (especially yeast breads), soups, pizza, roasted and grilled veggies...
My favorite family cooking traditions
Christmas candy making with my mom. She lives across the country now, so we haven't been able to do that since I moved..better on the waistlines!
My cooking triumphs
Planning an outdoor party for 20 people where the main course and the main side dish were to be grilled. It was POURING when the time came. I moved everything inside and prepared the food on stovetop and oven, and it turned out beautifully anyway.
My cooking tragedies
Making biscuits at my mom's house one time and accidentally using plain flour instead of self-rising. Needless to say, I had to make another batch of biscuits when I realized what I had done! Otherwise, I've been pretty lucky!
