I'm a graduate student in mathematics at the University of Victoria. I discovered the joy of cooking a few years ago — up until then, I wasn't particularly interested in food and generally survived on cheese melted on whatever I could find. Now I enjoy finding new things to cook for me and my fiancée Leah.
My favorite things to cook
I am most comfortable with a frying pan in one hand and a flipper in the other, so I most enjoy making things that come together on the range: wraps, pasta, stir fries, and the occasional casserole. I also love to make and eat Japanese food, especially rice bowls.
I still have a tendency to put cheese on everything.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My family has a rich history of making up ridiculous names for food, which I am proud to continue. I will have to try to sneak bip-bips, goop, or tater-doodles in my recipes somehow.
My cooking triumphs
Both are a bit of work, but when I want to pull out all the stops I'll make perogi pizza or cinnamon buns.
My cooking tragedies
The first time I made buttermilk pancakes, they were absolutely perfect in every way. But every batch I've attempted to make since then — and I've tried three or four times — has been entirely inedible.
