For those of you  who have been asking about the snowman cookies, I only WISH I could take the credit for the idea.
 
It's from Stacey's Sweet Shop. Stacey wrote a four-part blog showing how it's done, and I followed it to the letter.
 
Here are my pictures of the cookies. I'll post links to the blog and the recipes I used below.
 
 

 


 
I used Michelle's Soft Sugar Cookies for the dough and Royal Icing II to decorate.

I loved your cookies!.. Next time I want to flood the icing over the cookie like you did! I think it's darling! I'm not much of a cake decorator so I had trouble drawing on the arms, eyes, nose and buttons. It was my first time with Royal Icing too and it was the right icing for being able to wrap those little guys up and take to our Christmas dinner because it dried hard so they didn't get messed up; the only problem with that is my boys didn't care for it! They like soft icing so I'm going to have to test some icing next year; I do want to make them again! Love how you melted the head too! I didn't take the time to do it but I think he looks better that way! so adorable Pam! :)

Thanks Pam. Was trying to come up with an idea to send to my DD and her girlfriends at college and this will be great as they are in Charlotte and won't be having too much snow this year. I made the witches fingers at Halloween and even though my DD acted like I was nuts she said the kids ate them like crazy. Haven't been sending them anything latetly so this will be great-now to make some time to make cookies again (still burnt out from Christmas)!

Those are just too cool, Pam! I wish I were able to do stuff like that, but I just don't have the patience. Anyone who does, though, has my admiration!

I think those are the Cutest cookies I've ever seen! Out here in San Diego, where it's 78 degrees right now...I'm sure the kids would really find the humor in them! Thanks for the recipe!

Great job! These were actually my original design that Stacey had found on my blog/flickr(and many others...I've seen Mr. Melty mimicked all over the web since I first posted him over a year ago.) I hadn't realized how much he has exploded until recently when I started tracing his popularity. So flattering!

oops! sent that too fast above...skip right over my last comment! I did come up with the melting snowman cookie over a year ago, but definitely can't claim Stacey found him on my blog. He's been all over the place in so many versions, it's impossible to trace his source to moi. And her versions are super cute with the marshmallow!

I was looking for a new sugar cookie recipe and saw the photos of your ADORABLE cookies! Then I saw you had a blog... and I found the post! AND you linked it to the original! THANK YOU! I can't wait for snowy weather to arrive so my kids and I can make these!

Why in the heck would you use rock hard royal icing on these adorable cookies??!! Take a can of store bought Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker or whatever, microwave for 15 to 30 SECONDS, stir well and go on from there. This will give a coating with a slight 'crust' yet a soft interior - MUCH MORE PLEASANT to eat than royal icing! And why else do we make cookies, cute or whatever but to EAT and ENJOY!!!

I loved making and giving these sweeties away! The only problem I had was the marshmallows. Either my microwave is super powerful, or I read the instructions wrong. I could only do 4 at a time, and keep them in for 8 seconds max at a low power level. Did anyone else have this problem?

I attempted to make these for a Christmas party for homeless keiki, but I used expired baking powder, so I ended up throwing out the whole batch of cookie dough. So I then bought a pre-packaged roll of sugar cookies (peppermint candy kind) and the instant icing in a bottle...melted the marshmallows perfectly, and then screwed up the decorating part. What a mess! lol! Just want to warn anyone who wants to try this...make sure your baking powder isn't expired, or buy cream or tartar to use with baking soda as suggested in the recipe, and follow the recipe for the icing given. The bottled kind did not harden and it wasn't pure white like it shows on the label. I was able to get the icing to look melted over the edges of the cookies fairly well. But, have the proper tools for decorating, and maybe the right candies as well. And don't use drawing gel...doesn't work and too hard to control. Well, at least my chocolate chip cookies were a huge hit! lol

to cakepanvicky...you can use whatever frosting you want but you won't get the same effect and the cookies won't travel well. It's fine if you have room to keep them all spread out, though. You just can't stack them on a plate or bag/box them without making a mess.

It was also very hard to find anything black to make the stick arms with, so I thought next time I'd go with thin licorice whips and cut them up to size. Also, red twizzlers would make cute scarves if you peel them thin and cut them up. I used chocolate chips for the buttons,didn't really like the results. I think coal black buttons, eyes and mouth would have been perfect...maybe use the licorice cut up small for that, too. As for other decorations, I guess the royal icing is the way to go especially for the carrot nose and other decorations as shown. I ended up cutting up little pieces of carrot as a last minute solution, but they didn't stay fresh more than a day! Looked cute the first day, though!

About Me
I have three teenage sons who are picky eaters (especially the middle one). I try to cook things that they might enjoy trying, but they're not always willing to try new things. My husband started out a picky eater when we met back in 1986, but he's gotten much better and is willing to try ALMOST anything I make. In my spare time I teach second grade. I have introduced my students to cooking and/or new foods over the years.
My favorite things to cook
I love to try all sorts of new recipes, so I don't really have a favorite thing to cook. I enjoy using fresh ingredients from the garden and canning those ingredients to use year-round. I also enjoy baking treats for my second grade class. I'll try almost anything if I think my family will eat it. Of course, I've been known to try a recipe because I want to, whether they'll eat it or not.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love making the pumpkin pies and other desserts for Thanksgiving. I always like to try one new dessert for each holiday. Baking Christmas cookies is a tradition that goes back as long as I can remember.
My cooking triumphs
I've made some pretty cool cakes for my boys' birthdays. They include a firetruck, baseball, football, and Pokeball. I've also used shaped pans to decorate everything from Barney and Elmo, Power Ranger, Jeff Gordon's #24 racecar, football helmet, a dog and dog house, a monkey, a giant cupcake, and a penguin. Some recent cakes have been a pizza, chef's hat, and Topsy-Turvy (Mad Hatter Cake.) The last one didn't collapse - that was a real triumph! One of my best triumphs has been teaching my boys to cook. They'll never go hungry.
My cooking tragedies
The first time I cooked a turkey I relied on my thermometer to tell when it was done. It wasn't.
