I grew up in a family that sat down and ate simple, delicious meals at home together every night. My mother and my grandparents were phenomenal cooks. I have great memories of baking with my mother, shopping at the market with my grandmother, and picking fresh fruits and veges from the garden. My grandparents used to own a restaurant so I grew up learning to experiment and take risks with different foods. Greek was an all time favorite in the house and grandmother was a traditional Southern cook. The meals were big and the food was plenty.
When grandfather would call me into the kitchen I knew he had something delicious for me to try. Unfortunately, the recipes were never written down so I'm left to do my own experimenting to recreate the foods I loved and grew up with. I will share some of these favorites when I find the time to post them.
My favorite things to cook
Italian and poultry dishes
Desserts / holiday cookies
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother and I would make cookies and fudge every year together. I always looked forward to baking with her. Now, I'm carrying on the traditions with my own daughter while expanding our traditional recipes with wonderful new additions.
My cooking triumphs
Got my chicken cordon bleu and lasagna down to a science!
My cooking tragedies
Using only butter in some of my cookie recipes has resulted in thin cookies. I highly recommend cutting the butter in half and/or replacing with butter flavored shortening instead. Shortening doesn't spread like butter. You won't taste the difference and there's less saturated fat.
