About this Cook
I am a full-time mom to 3 kids, ages 17, 12 and 7. I am also a part-time tutor to about 50 teenagers at a local junior high. I love working at a school - everyone there is appreciative of baked goods in the staff lounge. Although I have always enjoyed cooking and baking, I usually just stuck to the basics. This website has given me the opportunity to branch out, try new recipes and flavors, and get my kids to expand their tastes as well. Thankfully, another favorite hobby of mine is Jazzercise, where I can go work-off all of the baked goodies.
My favorite things to cook
Baking....cookies, cakes, brownies, bread pudding, muffins, quick breads. I also love using my slow cooker.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I don't think my kids have ever dyed Easter eggs. I always gave them the choice of decorating Easter sugar cookies or dying the eggs, and they have always chosen the cookies. We also decorate cookies for Halloween and Christmas. We usually try to make it a party and invite their friends over to participate. I always make peanut brittle, fudge and toffee during the fall and winter holidays.
My cooking triumphs
Until just recently, I could never get my cheesecakes to turn out just right every time. Now, we have cheesecake almost weekly, and they have all been delicious.
My cooking tragedies
I wouldn't call mine tragedies, but when I get in a hurry.... ingredients get forgotten, flour canister gets dropped (happened more than once), eggs roll off the counter. Lets just say that my kitchen floor pays for a lot of my mistakes.

Banana Oatmeal Crumb Cake
I love banana bread, so I fully expected to enjoy this cake. But... it really just wasn't that great. I found it to be on the dry side, and didn't care for the addition of the oats (although the banana oat bread from this site is delicious). So, I guess that I will stick to making breads from my over ripe bananas.

Creamy Orange Cake
This was just "okay" for us. I did use a white cake mix instead of orange, but don't think that the orange would have really helped. The gelatin part just seemed to make the cake "wet" in places. The topping was actually very good, and I ended up scraping most of it off and eating it with a spoon. It was like a citrus mousse. Wouldn't make the cake again, but may make the topping and eat it out of a bowl!

Neat Sloppy Joes
This is pretty much my go-to recipe for sloppy joes. I don't use the celery because no one in my family cares for it. Other than that, I follow the recipe, and it is a winner everytime. This recipe works great in a slow cooker as well. Just brown up your meat in a skillet and then add everything to the slow cooker. 4-5 hours on low, and it is perfect and ready to eat when you are.
