About this Cook
I'm back in New Orleans now and loving the access to seafood! I think the stint in Uganda tested my cooking creativity (with a lack of ingredients was used to having on hand) and now I'm in cook heaven. I'm also very lucky to work in a place that has an amazing teaching kitchen and a program where celebrity chefs come in to do demonstations. I'm learning tons!
My favorite things to cook
Soups and stews are at the top of the list as the variations are endless and the only limitation is your imagination (and what's in the fridge...) I enjoy baking but it definitely is not my strong suit.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I am a child of the fifties so my family's cooking traditions centered around cans. Could be why I am such a fresh food fanatic now!
My cooking tragedies
I lived in a communal home in the eighties with some amazing bakers. I watched them toss bread together with supernatural powers. I tried it once and made a loaf of bread so hard, so dense, so totally inedible that I buried it in the garden...

French Onion Soup XI
Hmmm... After reading all these great reviews, I'm trying to figure out why mine came out less flavorful, an almost bland, sweetish taste that was definitely not my fave. Followed the recipe, used a Dos Equis beer and increased the salt and pepper - to no avail!

Black Bean Lasagna
I probably won't use this recipe again. It turned out okay but just. As one reviewer said, the tortillas turn to mush in this dish and the avocados are lost in the mix. Seemed a little labor-intensive for a mediocre final product.

Vegetarian Korma
Very good! I enjoyed this; the aroma, the gorgeous colors, the spices. But as others have said, it definitely requires a lot more heat. I added turmeric, garam masala, and lots more curry than called for and it still could have used more. I will also use 2 cups of coconut milk instead of 1 next time which will increase the yummy sauce. And there WILL be a next time...
