Horseradish Deviled Eggs

Reviewed: Jul. 4, 2011
I've made these a couple of times now and I like them more each time I make them. They absolutely disappeared when I served them over the holiday weekend. Everyone enjoyed the horseradish twist on an old favorite.

Artichoke Stuffed Mushrooms

Reviewed: Jul. 4, 2011
Everyone enjoyed the artichoke heart as a nice change from the usual stuffed mushroom recipes. I didn't change anything and I'll make these again!

Shirred Eggs

Reviewed: Jun. 21, 2011
I've made these several times now. I use another reviewer's recommendation of using a muffin tin (just make sure to spray it with Pam first). The versatility is endless - you can experiment with combinations of cheese, herbs, and a touch of meat (e.g. chopped bacon) - and the presentation is very nice.

Hot and Sour Chicken Soup

Reviewed: Apr. 25, 2011
This was excellent, with one big adjustment and one recommendation. Adjustment: the red wine vinegar came across too strongly. It overwhelmed the balance of the broth. Once we realized what was off-kilter we had a hard time finishing our soup because that is all we could taste. With a little reduction in quantity of that ingredient, this recipe is definitely one to make. Recommendation: cut your chicken in smaller pieces than you think. For a soup, you want the chicken to be small enough to not overwhelm the limited real estate of your spoon. With those notes, I will share this recipe and make it again. Thanks!

Scotch Eggs with Mustard Sauce

Reviewed: Apr. 16, 2011
This was really enjoyable and the mustard sauce REALLY made the breakfast. With that said, it was a bit of work!

Sausage Potato Casserole

Reviewed: Apr. 10, 2011
This was a great recipe! I made it as-written, except for substituting a scallion for the onion since that is what I had on hand. Hubby really liked it and I'll be re-heating the leftovers this morning and pairing it with scrambled eggs.

Mushroom, Leek, Chicken Sausage and Tortellini Soup

Reviewed: Apr. 3, 2011
This soup was exceptionally good. The flavors were well-balanced and eating this soup produced moans and utterances of "so good" (even moreso on the second bowl)! I made this with 2 Tbl Tabasco on the advice of others and the heat was subtle, though I think I will go full strength the next time I make this. This is one of my best Allrecipes finds in some time. Thank you, Jane!

Salmon Pie I

We made this with mashed potatoes instead of rice. Everyone loved it. We will definitely make this again. Thanks for the recipe!

Broccoli Ham Ring

Reviewed: Feb. 15, 2011
Pros: the crust baked up to be beautiful with a coating of egg yolk. The idea is great and one I will adapt. Cons: the dijon-swiss flavor combined to be overwhelming to my family's palates. Additionally, the saltiness of the ham really came through. Overall: great idea I will adapt, but as-written we did not care for it.

Heavenly Potatoes and Ham

Reviewed: Feb. 3, 2011
As written, I would almost give this 3 stars. I omitted the additional bread crumbs and 1/4 cup butter at the end and even then my family all thought that this was too rich. That said, I did enjoy this and think it would be great with a little less butter in the base and a few more potatoes. I think taking the base with less butter, and less the breadcrumbs and add'l 1/4 cup butter, would be really great paired with scrambled eggs cooked separately. I'll definitely retain this recipe as a base. Yum!

Shredded Beef Chimichangas

Reviewed: Jan. 29, 2011
Oh my - true goodness. The meat filling was great, but the true star of the show was something so simple as a tortilla buttered on both sides and baked at high heat. I will definitely make this again, although I will double the tortillas and use the same amount of meat filling. I used cheddar and melted it on top of the crispy shells for another minute or two in the oven. Any cheese would be great and I could definitely adapt this to chicken or pork, and try pepper jack or the Monterey this recipe called for. This recipe elicited as much pleasure as a really good steak!

Irish Lamb Stew

Reviewed: Jan. 16, 2011
Absolute goodness. I'm a happy cook and my family and friends are happy eaters. To make this great you must do the flour, salt, and pepper coating, as well as the deglazing. Used 12 oz of Scuttlebutt beer instead of wine - 8 oz would be about right. I did it with a 4 lb Costco piece of boneless roast that I cubed - it was just about right for meat content. Nevertheless - true happiness for a winter meal.

Brussels Sprouts in a Sherry Bacon Cream Sauce

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2010
This was the first time I ever made brussels sprouts for my family. I was very nervous as they took their first bites, but all of them (including a 9-yo and a 7-yo) ate it and complimented it.

Creamed Onions and Sage

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2010
This was a hit at Christmas, beautifully complimenting the Prime Rib. Several family members expressed interest in making it a traditional side at Christmas. I made it ahead of time and refrigerated it. Several reviews on this site expressed a dislike of the lemon zest and juice, but we really liked it - the key to that flavor is the zest, so if you aren't going to use zest then skip the lemon altogether. We'll definitely be making this again!

Quick Sausage Party Melts

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2010
This was a big hit at Christmas. I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 because the Velveeta came through stronger than I enjoy. I'll make this again but cut the Velveeta taste with another cheese.

Chicken Spaghetti Casserole I

This recipe was a big disappointment. Tasted like "cream of" mush. Thank goodness it was cheap to make. Sorry, but it is bad when the replacement food your family wants is Top Ramen and canned Clam Chowder...

Smoked Salmon and Egg Salad

Reviewed: Nov. 24, 2010
I'm sorry, we did not care for this. The smoked salmon completely overwhelmed the egg salad. We love smoked salmon and we love egg salad but the combination was not good.

Barbeque Halibut Steaks

Reviewed: Sep. 15, 2010
I baked this in convection and covered by foil at 425 for ~30 minutes in addition to the rice dish I made. My kiddos annihilated this and my 9-year-old took enthusiastic seconds. I doubled the sauce to cover a Costco-sized cut of halibut. Unlike other reviewers, I actually DON'T recommend marinating this, as it was pretty sweet and by baking it unmarinated the sauce complimented the natural fish flavor rather than overwhelming it.

Summer Squash Casserole

Reviewed: Aug. 29, 2010
I'm sorry, but we did not like this. I took one bite and told the hubby and kids they didn't even need to eat their "try it" servings. I wish that I'd just split the squash and baked it with olive oil and seasonings - that would have been a better use of the squash and much more enjoyable. This was soggy bread mixed with melted mozzarella and bland squash.
