This past winter I was browsing in a junk shop on a slushy, gray day, and came across a large┬ádilapidated doll house stuck in the back room. Something about it attracted me. I never had a doll house when I was a child, and I played with all sorts of dolls a lot then. My parents were not ones… MORE

About this Cook
I retired as a court reporter from a common pleas court. I have 4 grown children and 4 grandchildren. I love being retired! I enjoy being a homemaker now, cooking good meals and baking bread! And of course I love being able to be with my grandchildren much more than when I was working. Ohio is a beautiful state with 4 seasons, and I enjoy each one.
My favorite things to cook
Bread, Italian dishes, fruit and savory pies.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I had to teach myself to cook, my mother never wanted any of us kids in the kitchen, and I really can't think of any cooking traditions.
My cooking triumphs
Bread, salisbury steak, lasagna, stuffed peppers and spaghetti & meatballs are my favorite dishes to make.
My cooking tragedies
I struggle with every meatloaf I make. Rarely do I make a good meatloaf. Don't know why.

Dark Rye Bread
Fantastic recipe. I was very happy that I got a nice rise, which can be very hard when using rye or whole wheat flour. The second time I made it, I added chopped fresh dill and a tsp. of minced garlic. Wonderful. Thanks so much for posting this recipe.

Boiled Bagels
Made this recipe as written. The bagels turned out well, however I am wondering why no one else mentioned the amount of water given in the recipe. I had to use 2 cups of water, as the dough did not come together at all with the 1 1/2 cups. It was humid and actually a rainy day when I made these, so I don't think it was the atmosphere. Anyway, they turned out fine after adding the extra water, so all is well. Will make again.

Salisbury Steak
I had a severe attack of gout and have had to adapt a number of great recipes from AR. If you are prone to gout, broths and soups made with beef or chicken broth are one of the worst things you can eat. I was so hungry for this Salisbury Steak that I had to find something to sub for the canned onion soup. So I caramelized two very large yellow onions, which made a little over a cup, then I put them in a small saucepan with about a cup and a half of vegetable broth and gently warmed that and let it cool. I then followed the recipe as written, except using my homemade onion soup concentrate in place of the canned. It turned out fabulous and tasted exactly the same: Delicious.
