I have found a new challenge in the form of Super Grand.  This store went into what was DH's frequented grocery store during his bachelor days. The variety and diversity of foods available at Super Grand is awesome! For entertainment the other day, I acquiesced and took the family to this… MORE

On Saturday, January 21, 2012 the family set out for our second Cupcake Adventure.  Our chosen city this time was Annapolis, MD.  The day before I had pulled up an article with three "Cupcakeries" listed that we hoped to check out.  Unfortunately, as we cruised East on Rt 50 I noted that the… MORE

Today's inspiration was started by DH's desire to check out the cupcake scene in Georgetown.  As I researched the location of the now infamous Georgetown Cupcake, I noted the existence of other "cupcakeries" that have gotten a significant number of positive reviews.  I added them to my GPS… MORE

Wow!  After a truly grueling year in school, it is finally over!  This is the first time I have actually been wishing for summer to come quickly and for school to end for a while.  In celebration I decided to provide watermelon for each of the kids' end-of-the-year party.  It had a selfish… MORE

Ahhh ... what fun we had on our "Day After Thanksgiving Cooking Frenzy"! It was good to see friends from our college days and enjoy some time together both around town and in the kitchen.  An immensely varied meal was enjoyed in the evening.  That meal definitely came with a few… MORE

Today I was faced with an interesting challenge.  Having a potentially broken foot that I am not to put any weight on whatsoever, I was heading into dinner prep without the ability to run to the store to pick up what I may have been lacking in my chosen recipe.  Time to step out of the box … MORE

According to DH, anything healthy is greatly frowned upon by his doctor.  On this particular day, I outsmarted DH's "doctor"! DH gladly grilled the brats while I finished up the sides for the meal.  He grilled three types of meat:  a German-style Bratwurst, a Chicken/Turkey &… MORE

I've felt quite inspired by the trip I recently took to Lancaster, PA.  The food we enjoyed at Sukhothai and at John J. Jeffries was exquisite and wonderful.  I felt great on everything we ate.  What was different?  The food we ate was heavy on the veggies and light on meat and fat.  It was… MORE

Ok, this is a foodie site so here I will air my foodie woes.  Today for lunch I had a chicken pie from Schwan's.  It was tasty and homestyle and just fit the bill for a quick lunch.  The only grief I have with my lunch is what the package said on the outside, "Chicken Pot… MORE

Today will be interesting!  My family would go on a revolt if I tried to sell them on vegetarian grilling.  As luck would have it our friends' vegetarian daughter has agreed to join us for dinner tonight!  Yippee!  I pulled two recipes; one for vegetarian burgers (I bought Boca) and the other… MORE

About Me
I am a PA Dutch-raised SAHM who now lives in the suburbs of D.C. I have two awesome kids who are now both in Elementary school and I am learning to balance home, school and community ... haven't passed that test yet. My favorite room in the house is the kitchen and I love to cook for friends. I am a displaced Recipezaarian and am making AllRecipes.com my new home and homepage.
My favorite things to cook
I love baking cakes in varying flavors. Unfortunately, being diabetic, I'm limited to baking cakes when I know there will be plenty of people to consume them! I have learned to love trying to copycat recipes from fine-dining experiences we have. I rely mostly on recipes but often step out of the box with substitutions to increase the "healthy" factor in the foods that I serve.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My favorite cooking memories are making Christmas cookies at Grandma O's house(especially her Sand Tarts!) and having wonderful home-cooked dinners at Grandma E's House on Sundays with the best homemade bread, dried corn and real mashed potatoes. Two of my favorite Christmas offerings as I grew up were my mom's homemade chocolate-covered buttercreams and my Aunt Janice's "candy-cane bread".
My cooking triumphs
The most memorable dish I have made was a Peanut Butter Pie from The Common Grill Cookbook by Chef Greg Common in Ann Arbor, MI. It "WOWed" Mom's group and was a best-seller at the concession stand for the church plays. All of the dishes I made from Chef Common's cookbook have been hits but prep is sometimes a bit extensive so I save them for special occasions.
