French Short Pastry

Reviewed: Jun. 27, 2013
I used this recipe this morning to make the 120 Calories Peach Pies from this site. After allowing the dough to sit for 30 minutes after processing, I cut the eight 4" circle crusts, put them into the fridge for 15 minutes, then filled the crusts and baked. The crust was tender and tasty and oh-soooo-easy to make.

120 Calorie Peach Pies

Reviewed: Jun. 27, 2013
I used a food processor pastry recipe from this site (French Short Pastry) which made these mini pies so easy. Most importantly, they taste good. Hard to believe that 1 slice (you may need 2 if it's small) of a peach gives you that much flavor. Will be making again, trying other fruits in addition to peach/nectarine.

Enhance That Jar of Spaghetti Sauce

Reviewed: Jun. 25, 2013
Understand that this spaghetti sauce only will be as good as the jar of pasta sauce that you use, and there is a fair amount of chopping and slicing involved. This just isn’t a quick weeknight meal where you brown some ground beef, add a jar of sauce, and then serve over some pasta. My husband bought a jar of Classico Basil and Tomato Pasta Sauce which has been sitting around collecting dust, so I decided to give this recipe a try. If you’re going to do this much prep work, you might as well use canned tomatoes (fresh would be even better) and make your own spaghetti sauce rather than using a jar of pasta sauce as the base. The recipe also doesn't tell you when to add the mushrooms that you've sautéed. We ate it, but I thought it was just ordinary and not tasty enough to justify all of the prep work and the fairly long of ingredients that you'd be using if you made your own spaghetti sauce. Sorry for the bad review, but this just didn't work for us.

Watermelon and Strawberry Lemonade

Reviewed: Jun. 25, 2013
I had watermelon and strawberries in the back of the fridge, so I used AR's ingredient search and found this recipe. It's outstanding.seriously.exceeded my expectations!! I used Splenda, and since my fruit was so ripe, cut back on the amount. The great thing about this drink is that the strawberries, watermelon, and lemon juice are perfectly balanced, not one dominating the other. Very refreshing on this hot summer day. This is a keeper.

Garlic Crouton Slices

Reviewed: Jun. 25, 2013
I wanted these crouton slices for soup, I thought 1" would be too thick, so I sliced the bread about 1/2" which worked perfectly. Very simple to make and nice flavor. Worked great for the french onion soup I had for lunch today but would be equally good just to spread with whatever you usually use on crostini.

Mayan Mocha Powder

Reviewed: Jun. 23, 2013
I know it’s June and in the 90’s in Florida, but I was intrigued by this recipe’s ingredients. Had to give it a try. I’m glad I did because I really liked it. I substituted Truvia for the sugar to save on calories but, otherwise, followed the recipe except for giving it a little shot of whipped topping. I’ve never had a cocoa-coffee drink with cayenne in it, but I loved that little kick that it gives this drink. Honestly, I seldom like any of these powder drink mixes that have instant coffee in them, but this one worked for me. Who knows, maybe even try it on ice for the summer.

Raspberry-Sour Cream Crumb Cake

Reviewed: Jun. 22, 2013
I used Truvia Baking Blend (for the first time) instead of sugar, and it worked great in this recipe. The raspberries sweeten the cake, and the lemon zest brightens the flavor. Very nice coffee cake.

Blueberry and Raspberry Pancake Topping

Reviewed: Jun. 22, 2013
Used fresh berries instead of frozen and served over french toast. I think this could be tweaked a bit to be a 5-star recipe (at least for us), but it's still very good as written.

Patty Melt on Pumpernickel

Reviewed: Jun. 20, 2013
The ground beef mixture made a good burger. Pretty much just a standard patty melt, but we enjoyed it.

Ham and Pear Panini

Reviewed: Jun. 20, 2013
I was concerned that regular yellow mustard would overpower the delicate flavor of the pear, so I used Dijon which was the perfect choice for us. Personal taste preference, but in the future, I will use swiss cheese instead of mozzarella which I thought was lost (flavor-wise) in this sandwich. Swiss and ham are always great partners. The sweetness of the pear marries well with the ham and cheese. Enjoyed it, good sandwich.

Chicken with Artichokes and Sundried Tomatoes

Reviewed: Jun. 19, 2013
The recipe doesn't say what kind of olives to use, so I used black olives. Loaded with flavor and extremely easy to make. Brenibree, thanks for sharing this outstanding recipe.

Tomato Watermelon Salad

Reviewed: Jun. 19, 2013
I tasted after mixing up this salad, and then added more vinegar, but otherwise, followed the directions. I was out of white balsamic, so I used Trader Joe's orange muscat champagne vinegar which gave it a nice zing. For my own taste preference, I will add more mint the next time, but this is a nice and refreshing watermelon-tomato salad.

Basil Turkey Burgers

Reviewed: Jun. 18, 2013
After adding only 1/4 cup Eggbeaters (not 1/2 cup as specified in the recipe), the meat mixture was so wet that I was afraid it was going to fall through the grates on the grill and be impossible to flip. I ended up using a grill pan and cooking on top of the stove. On the positive side, these turkey burgers really do taste good, but honestly, I have to wonder if the egg substitute is even necessary.

Sundried Tomato Tapenade

So easy to make and full of flavor. In addition to serving over cream cheese as recommended by the recipe author, this would make a fantastic topping for crostini. Thanks Alexis for sharing your recipe, this is a keeper.

Whiskey Sours

Reviewed: Jun. 16, 2013
I didn't need 26 cups of whiskey sour's, so I scaled this recipe down using AR's "change servings" feature. I think the ingredient proportions are really off on this recipe. There's too much orange juice and water, and not enough lemonade and bourbon. It tasted watered down and almost void of any bourbon. I made adjustments, so it was drinkable, but I won't be making this again. Sorry CookingGirl for the bad review, but this was a disappointment.

Turkey Tenderloins

Reviewed: Jun. 12, 2013
We grilled instead of broiling, and this turned out tasty and moist. Admittedly, I had concerns about a soy sauce-based marinade on turkey, but it did not overwhelm the flavor. I did boil the marinade and made a nice sauce with a cornstarch slurry. Also, using reduced-sodium soy sauce resulted in a main course that broke down very well nutritionally. Definitely will be making this again.

Salty Cumin Lassi

Reviewed: Jun. 12, 2013
I've had cumin lassi's, and I was looking forward to making my first at home. You need to love, love, L-O-V-E cumin to enjoy this. It has so much cumin that it's the only thing that I could taste. IMO it needs the cumin reduced significantly (maybe start with just 1 tsp or less) and perhaps add some mint or fresh cilantro as a complement to the cumin. Sunaina, sorry for the bad review, but this recipe just didn't work for me.

Honey Lime Fruit Salad

Reviewed: Jun. 11, 2013
In addition to the fruits called for in this recipe, I used nectarines, cantaloupe and added some lime zest. This is a simple, classic, and fresh fruit salad with just the right amount of sweetness from the lime-honey dressing.
