Dave's Low Country Boil

Reviewed: Feb. 27, 2012
For shellfish purists there is nothing better than a good old "Boil"! Both the dish's name and a fun family &/or friends event all in itself, a Boil can be anything you want it to be, really. For instance. we enjoy all types of shellfish, so I always throw in a couple different varieties of steamers (clams in the shell...TIP: If the clam shells don't pop open when cooked, do NOT eat them), and I always add extra crab claws since these are a real big favorite. I go a step further by adding lobster claws as well. I prefer to use the Old Bay Seasoning in bags...2 or 3 is about right for a big lobster sized pot, which is about 2 to 3 times larger than the dutch oven size most folks have in their set of cookware. I add a couple of lemons; halved; I give ea half one good squeeze and throw it in the pot. When you're doing corn & potatoes altogether lemon might not be to your liking; it's all about your personal taste. For a big group I put out a good sized sauce pan of drawn (melted clarified) butter, with a gravy ladle and small ramekins for self serve along with a good size dish of lemon wedges. A bottle of tobasco will be welcomed by some, particularly if you're doing crawfish. I usually skip the sausage, as we prefer to grill some brats separately. If you've never done a Boil before, don't worry! Try not to overcook your shellfish; the rest takes care of itself! Let everyone take turns at the ice cream churn for a simple yummy dessert!

Roasted Garlic Bread

Reviewed: Dec. 18, 2011
I love recipes like this one for many reasons. First it's one of those things that requires minimum time yet presents itself as though you really fussed over it! Second, because it's a "kid helper" recipe...meaning that the youngsters can help you with this one, and really feel that they've contributed to the meal. I'm always looking for fun fast easy things that kids can help with. It's a way to help them learn & at the same time they are getting the right impression about baking & cooking...that it isn't a drag...it's fun for everyone in the family. In this busy "instant" world we're living in today, family time is at a premium. Making the meal together and then partaking of what you made together nourishes the body, the mind and the heart. Last, but not least, I LOVE roasted garlic! I make my bread the same way as the recipe, with just one regular addition...pile on the cheeeses! Parm, Asiago, Mozarella, etc. There's room for them all! :)

Candy Cane Cookies II

Reviewed: Dec. 16, 2011
These are without doubt my favorite holiday cookie! I loved making them with my Mom just as much if not better than actually eating them! We revived that tradition last December & had a lot of fun! One tip comes to mind about any kind of cookie dough that you'll be rolling flat, making balls or making these candy cane cookies: Don't use plain old flour when working with dough...use at LEAST half confectioner's sugar. Keeps the dough from becoming too dry & the cookies won't be tough from over-working with extra flour being added in that way. And now, I'm off to start cracking peppermint candies...it's THAT time of year again! I love to bake! :)

No Bakes

Reviewed: Dec. 7, 2011
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! My recipe box disappeared along with a lot of other stuff when we moved across the country 6 years ago. Each year I make up cookie tins & boxes, filled with all kinds of homemade goodies for neighbors, friends, & esp hubby's office. No Bakes were always a HUGE hit with adults & kids alike... so thanks to you Sherrie T., this year nobody's going to be asking me where those yummy chewy chocolate cookies are! (And I missed them too! Thought I'd looked everywhere...joined this site a week ago and VOILA! No better or easier cookie to make with kids and for them too! :-) TYTYTY!!!
