About this Cook
Well, I'm a Boise, Idaho transplanted native originally from California. I grew up in San Jose until the 4th grade then the folks mover to the Turlock/Delhi area; about 80 miles south os Sacramento. I definitely believe there is still a lot of Californai Girl in me, but I do love Idaho. I am the mother of 2 and grandmother of 3. I like to read, Oh, especially old English Poetry. Lordy, I just melt when I read one of Shakespeare's sonnets or John Donne's poetry and Lord Byron. I enjoy sewing, crocheting, and quilting. I think life is taken way too seriously; sure there are serious things in life, but you still need to laugh. I also wish the world could just be one big "Brady Bunch". I am a hopeless optimist and figure things could be worse. And, I think everyday has the ability to be a good day. If you woke up alive and everyone you care about woke up alive then, it's a good day. Geeze, even a broken clock is right twice.
My favorite things to cook
I enjoy cooking challenging things. Not the every day stuff that you can do blindfolded. And I love to make my dishes look good. I'm not sure I have favorites. During the winter I like to make what I call one pan dinners. Stews, soups and things in large bubbly pans.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My family doesn't have any long standing traditions but my husbands family does and I have, with the help of my sainted mother-in-law and sweetheart husband, learned to cook some of them. When his family gets together for the holidays, I love to help my sisters-in-law make the dinner. They are all German Mennonite and I love their traditions. They make dished for the holidays that they made before they came to America. That's cool.
My cooking triumphs
Having my mother-in-law ask me to bring a family favorite to a large family Christmas gathering when everyone else was raised in a German Mennonite commuinty and grew up with the food and I didn't.
My cooking tragedies
Somehow, I always seem to set fire to something during the holidays. It's usually the sweet potatoes either before they go into the oven or the marshmellows when I am going to toast them.

Cornbread Chicken Pot Pie
This is really good. I've never had a pot pie with a cornbread topping. It was quite a change and quite good. I used left over Thanksgiving turkey. I bought cauliflower and broccoli for Thanksgiving dinner and didn't use all of it so I added a bag of frozen beggies to the mix and I used fat free soup. Out of curiosity I made it as directed the first time, but the second time I made it, I added 1/2 cup drained salsa, some shredded PepperJack along with the Cheddar Cheese, plus a table spoon of taco seasoning to the turkey mixture. For the veggies I used half a can of drained and rinsed black beans and the corn cut from 2 ears of corn. Wow. both ways were great and I will absolutely be making it again...both ways.

Warm and Creamy Bacon Dip
This is so yummy. I made two batches; the first one as stated and the second one with some tweeks of my own. The ingredints sounded quite good, but I'm not a fan of bacon bits. The second batch I added a few things and I thought it had gone from good to great. The second time I added crushed crisp bacon pieces and some sliced black olives. Both bowls of dip disappeared at about the same rate, so I think if you care for the flavor of bacon bits, it's a hit. I definitely will make the dip again. Cheese dip doesn't last long here and I'm always looking out for new ways to make it. I like to spread the warm cheese dip on hot rolls or a slice of hot crusty bread. Oh, yum!!

Awesome Beef Vegetable Soup
Yep, this soup certainly earned its name...Awesome. I made the soup pretty close to how Michele stated, except I wanted a more hearty flavor. I am a pushover for beef stew and beef soups. I increased the amount of onion and used one the size of a softball, up'ed the garlic to 1 TBS minced, and I, being a chicken when it comes to hot food, had to back off the horseradish and hot sauce. When I cooked the ground meat, I used turkey and tried to keep it in small chunks. For the water, I added beef broth; using water just wastes so much flavor potential, up'ed the carrots to about 4 peeled and medium diced, 1 cup rough chopped celery, I didn't do all the corn, and added 2 good sized bay leaves. I served the soup in Sour Dough Bread Bowls from San Francisco. I also had a round loaf of San Francisco Sour Dough Bread because I figured if anyone wanted crusty bread with their soup, they would have to eat their bowl and then what would we do for seconds. I am pulling out recipes for the chilly weather coming up and this one is certainly going to be in the repertoire. The soup is quite good and inexpensive to make which always helps. Next time I make the soup I am going to try adding some extra herbs. Depending on how you are going to serve the soup, sometimes you want a thick soup and sometimes you want a soup with more liquid. Just add more water or broth for a less thick soup. Spmetimes you just want more broth for dunking your crusty bread. Very enjoyable.
