Curry Party Mix

Reviewed: May 23, 2015
I followed the recipe to a "T" except for using rice Chex instead of corn Chex (couldn't find corn Chex). There was not enough sauce to coat everything, and I had to double the amount. The flavour gets better the next day. It also smelled REALLY good while it was baking. I thought the flavour was okay, but my family liked it more.

Yum. I used this for cod and rice. Definitely has kick, but it's worth it!

Lebanese Restaurant Rice Pilaf

Reviewed: Apr. 14, 2015
This is not too similar to what Lebanese rice I've had but it is tasty nonetheless. I added a lot more nuts--2 or 3 times the stated amount--and a bit of golden raisins. Thanks for a good, versatile recipe.

Marinated Pork Tenderloin

Reviewed: Apr. 12, 2015
I often use this marinade as written or as a base recipe for tenderloin, though I always bake it instead of grilling. Thanks for a great recipe.

Easy Power Smoothie

Reviewed: Apr. 12, 2015
This is pretty tasty. I didn't use raw egg, and also reduced the cinnamon as a preference. This makes a really large drink--good for breakfast.

Real Food Orange Cream Ice Pops

Reviewed: Apr. 10, 2015
Delicious. I have popsicle moulds but use them for juice or coffee pops--never thought of using coconut milk. What a great idea! I had one lone clementine that no one wanted to eat so I used its juice in addition to orange juice (to make one cup total). Also added some specks of pulp for appearance and extra yumminess.

Avgolemono Soup

Reviewed: Apr. 6, 2015
Yummy! Very hearty and lemony. The only change I made was to coarsely shred the meat instead of chopping it. I think if you intend this for 6 servings, the soup is a complete meal. I served mine as smaller portions with dill bread so it came out to about 8 servings. Epic is right!

Spanish Potato Omelet

Reviewed: Apr. 5, 2015
Good, easy recipe! I left the skin on the potatoes as a preference; however that made the edges a little discoloured so I recommend you don't do the same if that would bother you. Served with tomato wedges and green onions. Because the omelette is (supposed to be) plain, I made some flavourful dill bread with cream cheese on the side. A pot of strong coffee rounded out a great breakfast!

Quinoa with Chipotle-Lime Dressing

Reviewed: Apr. 3, 2015
Delish :) I used only half the amount of quinoa (just a preference; I like my salads with a higher veg-to-quinoa ratio) and cooked it the way I normally do, with less water/broth. Also used homemade strained kefir instead of yogurt.I think I would add more avocado next time. And I was so eager to try this that I forgot to garnish, hehe. But this is definitely great as written!

Almond-Poppy Seed Muffins

Reviewed: Apr. 3, 2015
The crumb in these muffins is so moist and soft--easily the best part of this recipe. My kids really liked these muffins, but the almond extract flavour was too strong for me; I'd prefer a more natural, subtle aroma/flavour from the nuts themselves. I used twice the amount of poppyseeds and almond pieces instead of slivers to make it more pleasantly crunchy. Mainly for appearance, I sprinkled a bit of ground almonds on top of each muffin before baking. Also, not sure what size muffin tin was used for this recipe but I had to use a larger size (about 2.75" at the base) to make the servings work. Thanks for this recipe.

Egg Bhurji

Reviewed: Apr. 3, 2015
The spice combination in this recipe is yummy. As suggested, I had my eggs with buttered toasted bread and a cup of chai. I did have to make substitutions: I didn't have green chiles, only habaneros and bell peppers. I used a bit of both to even out the heat. Also, I used some green onions for colour.

Similar to a White Russian, but sweeter and with just a hint of chocolate flavour. A nice drink for this early spring evening!

Fried Boiled Eggs

Reviewed: Mar. 31, 2015
You had me at "fried" + "boiled" + "egg". I scaled the recipe down to one egg because I was peckish while working at home and just needed a snack. I boiled the egg the way I always do: rolling boil for 5 mins, turn off heat and leave pot as-is for another 5-6 minutes. Plunge egg into ice water for a few minutes. I sliced the egg crosswise into five pieces and fried them for about 2 minutes per side over med-high. Smashed some peppercorns, sprinkled on top. Yummy! The only thing I would change is the amount of butter--I didn't need as much as the recipe calls for and had to dab the egg slices with a napkin before eating.

Spicy Baked Tofu

Reviewed: Mar. 31, 2015
This was okay, more of a 3.5/5. I doubled the cayenne and sprinkled some chopped scallions on top before serving. I can't help but think this would be better stir-fried, because I found this really dry. (But I have never baked tofu before and didn't know to expect it, so I did not dock stars for that.) Overall the flavour was good, but perhaps some tweaking would make it excellent. Thanks for the recipe.

Tom Ka Gai (Coconut Chicken Soup)

Reviewed: Mar. 30, 2015
This is missing lemongrass. I found it bland, even though I added more ginger and cayenne. I had to put a few TB of green curry paste into it before I liked it; but by then it was a completely different dish.

Bramboracky (Czech Savory Potato Pancakes)

Reviewed: Mar. 28, 2015
These are tasty! I would definitely make again. I used a little more garlic than needed because I love it. Note: I think the measurements are wrong, because I used 2 potatoes and ended up with 6 small-medium pancakes instead of 3 large ones (using 1/4 cup each).

Coffee Jelly

Reviewed: Mar. 26, 2015
Very nice dessert for coffee lovers. I made this with strong coffee and 2.5 T Splenda instead of 3 T sugar, and it was just the right amount of bitterness for me. I put a dollop of whipped cream on mine but I think this would also be delicious served with a drizzle of evaporated milk. I added a tiny splash of vanilla while boiling the mixture but it wasn't enough--didn't taste it at all. Might try a bit more next time. But it was great without (tasting) it!

Chinese Fried Noodles

Reviewed: Mar. 26, 2015
I had some Chinese egg noodles that I wanted to use up so I made this recipe. This isn't 'authentic' Chinese by any means but it sounded like it would be good. I followed the suggestion in the Allrecipes magazine (added grated ginger) and just threw in whatever veggies I wanted to use up. I had no seasoning packet because I didn't use instant ramen, and I think the flavour was fine without it. Probably healthier too.
