Bob's Teriyaki Sauce and Marinade

Reviewed: Jan. 25, 2012
Seriously, this is the real deal. Just the way Mom used to make it when we lived in Japan. Don't try to substitute dried ginger because it just doesn't give you that bright hit of fresh ginger flavor. And when you do the cornstarch thickener, make sure your water is cold when you mix it in. Thanks for a good recipe, Bob!

Plum Blueberry Upside Down Cake

Reviewed: Aug. 1, 2011
What an amazingly easy cake, and so delicious. I made it with white peaches instead of plums, and I used a 9-inch cake pan. I had to bake it for longer than the 40 minutes specified in the recipe, but oh well. The secret to getting the cake out of the pan is to butter the bottom and the sides well, then let the cake rest for about three minutes after taking it out of the oven. Tilt the pan from side to side to get the cake to pull away, then put a plate over it and turn the whole thing over. (Protect your hands from the heat - but you knew that.) The cake was a big hit. Next time, I'll make it with plums.

Seriously great title for a fun-loving menu. And the jalapeno margaritas give the whole thing a real kick.

Easy Fruit Cobbler

Reviewed: Aug. 4, 2010
Here's how easy this is to throw together. Sister calls to see if she can borrow camping gear. No problem. C'mon by. Hang up phone. Heat oven. Stir batter. Slice fruit. Assemble and pop into oven. One hour later I'm dishing it up over ice cream with my sister. She's happy. I'm happy. You can be happy, too.

Hunza Bread II

Reviewed: Apr. 4, 2010
My friend the baking queen suggested I use this recipe to make hot cross buns this Easter. She also suggested icing them with a simple mixture of powdered sugar and freshly squeezed orange juice. So I did. My son said they were like eating pillows. I'm sure he meant warm, sweet pillows stuffed with currants. Because that's what I'M talking about! Just a note: I portioned the dough into 2-oz rolls, brushed them with an egg wash, and baked them for 20 minutes @ 350 degrees F. Perfect!

Irish Soda Bread

Reviewed: Mar. 18, 2010
Is it authentically Irish? Who cares? It's authentically delicious and very easy to make. I used currents instead of raisins because that's what I had, and baked it in a buttered cake pan lined on the bottom with parchment paper. Will I wait until next St. Patrick's Day to make this again? Heck, I'm not sure I can wait until next week!

Classic Gingerbread Cutouts

Reviewed: Oct. 30, 2009
This made an incredibly fragrant Halloween gingerbread house. I let the larger pieces bake a little longer, then let them sit in a 200 degree oven until they felt very firm. This was my first gingerbread house from scratch and I'm very happy with the results. Thanks for the recipe.

Plum Clafouti

Reviewed: Sep. 28, 2009
Easy to make and fun to say. What's not to love about clafouti? It comes in somewhere between a custard and a pie and you can make it with cherries, plums, peaches, figs...whatever is fresh. I wonder how it would work with apples or pears this fall? Let's find out!

Lavender Tea Bread

Reviewed: Jul. 8, 2009
Fragrant, lovely, slightly dense tea bread. I made it with fresh lavender from my garden, which added another reason to enjoy this recipe. The next time I make this, I'll reduce the amount of lavender to 2 tablespoons because it is possible to have too much of a good thing. I also glazed my loaf with confectioners' sugar mixed with freshly squeezed lime juice. Heavenly.

Rhubarb Cake I

Reviewed: Jun. 29, 2009
A cake so delicious I made it twice in one day. The second time around I cut the sugar back to 1 cup so the rhubarb flavor would come through. Very nice. My son wanted to eat it before dinner was ready. He got one bite. I'm the pushover mom of the year.

Chutney with Mint

Reviewed: Jun. 8, 2009
I needed to find a way to use up the mint that's taking over my garden, and while this put only a tiny dent in the crop, it was so delicious I'll make it again and again. I served it with curried chicken kabobs one night, grilled shrimp another night, and as a flavor agent on potroast sandwiches. It's amazing, versatile stuff. Thanks for the recipe!

Minnesota Broccoli Salad

Reviewed: Jun. 1, 2009
Here's how much my family liked this salad. My son didn't touch the portion on his plate until I urged him to have a bite. So he did. "Oh," he said after his first bite. "OH!" he said after his second bite. "This is really good!" he said, as he shoveled broccoli salad into his mouth. "Can I have some more?" he said. My husband ate two helpings of salad and said things like, "So is this the official Minnesota State Dish?" So yes, this is a winner. Thanks for the recipe!

Veronica's Apple Pancakes

Reviewed: Feb. 23, 2009
Wonderful pancakes! Here's my tweak: I tossed finely chopped apple with a mixture of cinnamon and sugar while I prepped the rest of the batter (I added a pinch of salt to the dry ingredients). Then I folded the cinnamon apples into the batter. Cold leftover pancakes made a great after-school snack today because the apples made the pancakes moist and tasty even without butter and syrup. Yeah, baby!
