Great flavor, easy to make. A definite winner for an unusual barbeque.

Zippy Barbecue Sauce

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2011
Tasty. Bottled BBQ sauce usually has smoke flavoring, which is a no-no for people allergic to MSG. I forgot Worcestershire, but it turned out well anyway. To give smokiness I subbed chipotle pepper.

Pecan Pie V

Reviewed: Jan. 12, 2008
Everyone who tasted this pecan pie over Christmas said it was the best they've ever had and my husband who usually avoids pecan pie because it's too sweet thought this was just right. The big drawback? The presentation was not attractive. I'm willing to work on a better look; the flavor is worth it. Followed the recipe completely, except I didn't put the pecans in first. Maybe this is the trick a prettier pie.

Delicious. Simple. Kids like it, too. In my small ramekins, I needed six dishes. I used mild cheddar.

Guinness® Corned Beef

Wonderful! Add 3-4 carrots, 2 potatoes, an onion, and additional Guiness. Very tasty, all-in-one meal. Cook in slow cooker all day and don't forget to put in spice packet.

Make-Ahead Turkey Gravy with Porcini Mushrooms and Marsala Wine

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2011
Awesome, but a fair amount of subs as Borneo stores didn't carry stuff. 2 turkey necks plus 4 strips bacon, 1/4 cup dry white wine plus 1 t brandy to replace Marsala, 1 c. Kallo vegetable broth from cube, 1 c. brown mushrooms with onion-carrots-celery to replace porcini. Left veg in broth overnight then strained. For sauce, about 1 c. brown mushrooms chopped finally. Absolutely delicious!

White Bean Chicken Chili

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2011
Update: We smoke turkey for Thanksgiving. We dice the leftover turkey to add to this chili. We then put the turkey carcass and skin in a big pot, cover it with water, and boil over night. The next morning, we have wonderful smoky turkey broth to use in this chili. This makes this great recipe even better! --- Great for using up Thanksgiving turkey. I subbed green tomatoes for the tomatillos since I don't have any (but better with them or salsa verde). You can boil the turkey carcass for a few hours to make the broth, too.

Butterscotch Apple Dumplings

Reviewed: Oct. 23, 2010
Fantastic! No major changes. I quartered the apples instead of halving - much better serving size. I put 1-2 teaspoons of the sugar-cinammon-nutmeg mixture into each smaller dumpling. While I had a lot of the sugar mixture left over, I thought it came out perfectly. Sweet, but not too sweet. Also, I forgot them in the oven. They may have been in an extra 20-40 minutes. Well browned, but delicious. I used Winesap apples - a rather tart apple. I brought it to the neighborhood cook out and they disappeared like hot cakes! The doughy part was wonderful.

Decorator Frosting

Reviewed: Jan. 9, 2011
Frosting is sweet, but not sickening so like many others. Works great for decorating cut out cookies. I use with Dora's Christmas Cookies, which with almond extract provide a savory counterpoint to the frosting. (Don't worry. It's still plenty sweet!) I suggest doubling the Decorator Frosting to use with one batch of Dora's recipe.

Gramma Brown's Corn Chowder

Reviewed: Jan. 12, 2008
Awesome! Don't want extra fat? You can use skim milk and then a potato - not half and half - to thicken. Boil one extra potato, puree, add in broth until it creates a slurry. Add to soup as thickener. Reserve the bacon for a topping - consider adding chopped green onion for a topping, too. Kids like to add shredded cheddar cheese as third garnish. I still use flour and otherwise follow the recipe. Very wonderful and filling.

French Toast Bake

Reviewed: Oct. 5, 2008
Oh so yummy. I prefer raspberries for a bit of tart, though blueberries were ok too. This makes an excellent brunch recipe because you can prep the night before. I use 16 slices of 1" bread, which over night fills the baking dish perfectly. Otherwise follow directions exactly.

Christmas 2011. Wonderful and easy. Followed directions. Guests asked for recipe. Held up pretty well for second day left overs. I did add some Bibb lettuce as I had it in the fridge.

Yummy. Careful not to overtake as they will dry out. Not sure if this is the best recipe for this type of cookie, but pretty darn good.

Five Minute Ice Cream

Reviewed: Jan. 12, 2008
Wow! I usually hate strawberry ice cream, because I don't like fake strawberry flavoring. This was easy and extremely tasty. Don't keep it in your freezer too long, though, because ice crystals will form and ruin the texture.

Brazilian Black Bean Stew

Reviewed: Feb. 21, 2009
Fun, fresh flavors! The stew is good until you add the mango / cilantro -- then it's awesome! I would double the mango / cilantro. Put in 1 deseeded jalapeno and it wasn't spicy in the least. Guests loved it. I can't believe this is healthy. Also, makes more like 10-12 servings and prep time about 1 hour for chopping. Pair with simple spinach salad, sour dough or Italian bread, and light, fruity white wine. Attractive dinner party meal.

Witches' Brew

Kids loved it! Fingers a little fragile and broke some off. I threw them in the punch and kids thought severed fingers were creepy. Punch was "potion" of half ginger ale and half apple juice.
