I'm sure many of you are aware that I made a much dreaded journey back to Michigan, to celebrate mom's 90th birthday recently.  The highlight of the trip was a stop my sis chauffered us to on the Saturday... A bright, sunny morning gave way to a beautiful afternoon.  Our journey began with a… MORE

Well, folks, I'm happy to report that I was released yesterday... perhaps due to the fact that I didn't have to throttle anyone... not that both sis and I weren't tempted many a time! Friday came and went wonderfully... short of the "issues" of a mind that repeats itself every 20 mins!  Mom… MORE

My last few days have been wracked with issues...  I've come to a few realizations, however.  I stopped taking my "anxiety" pills some months back.  What a great stride!  Alas, I was a total blithereing idiot all day yesterday, so out came the "overstock" and I'm back on the pills... … MORE

Hot dogs, pot roast, baked chicken or pork...  I never knew that a "picnic" wasn't really a HAM  for many years...  Then my years in England... the over done beef roast with Yorkshire pudding, fish & chips once a week...  My very first "hamburger" over there was made of GROUND HAM of all… MORE

The Arrow, and the Song.... Henry Wadsworth Longfellow... I shot an arrow into the air, It fell to earth, I knew not where; For, so swiftly it flew, the sight Could not follow it in it's flight. I breathed a song into the air, It fell to earth I knew not where; For who has sight so keen… MORE

I've had the pleasure this average Thursday to enjoy some of each!  Temperature wise, we're down 10 degrees or more as a high... that's a GREAT thing... I can certainly deal with 100, tho' this time of year seems it should be a bit cooler.  Desire to cook has fluctuated some, and I… MORE

I remember that morning... snoozing soundly, when the phone rang...  "The Twin Towers are on fire!"  My apologies to any and all... that in itself didn't mean much to me at the time, after all, I was 2500 miles away...  It wasn't until later in the day that I began to understand just what had… MORE

A dear friend who dropped dead of a heart attack some yrs back now, happened to give me a magnet for the frige.  Now, I'm not a "fan" of cluttering up the frige (tho' we are currently doing so with fast food coupons!) but it took no time at all, to decide to display this one proudly!  It… MORE

Now that the dust has settled, and the kitchen is once again semi cleaned up, I must share my Monday evening culinary issues... The sirloin steaks were marinating awaiting their grill time, I'd put second half of the dinner roll dough in the oven (they turned out great! BigShotsMom!) and… MORE

About Me
Started cooking many years ago, and learned as I went. First meal may have been "steak & chips" at age 15, in Birmingham England, where I lived for several years. Mostly grew up in MI, transplanted to the desert 30yrs ago, or so. Favorite cookbook is "Better Homes", also enjoy "Great British Cooking, a well kept secret." Hesitate to call myself "expert," but friends do rave...
My favorite things to cook
Italian has been my "specialty" for some time, and my "signature" meal is Lasagne, salad, garlic bread, which I first made 20yrs ago... from SCRATCH, very first time I made it. (Never again, folks...) Now start with a big jar of sauce!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanks to my heritage, I have enjoyed trying foods from different cultures. We still have beer battered fish, and chips of course; ground meat dishes often, chicken occasionally, pork too. I would love to submit a bean dip recipe, however, my ex who gave me the original has passed, and I have no way to verify that it didn't come from another source! I also enjoy British cooking (with a few yankee twists) and once made Plum puddings, also known as Christmas puddings, as far as I know... what an ordeal that was, but well worth the effort. Today, there is mail order!
My cooking triumphs
Greatest triumph was not too long ago, when I held a sit down dinner for 12, Lasagne being the entree. It was a fund raiser I chose to sponsor, and am proud to say that "we" raised over $1000 from that meal alone, minimum donation being $25. All proceeds collected were donated; my partner and I provided the meal and beverages.
My cooking tragedies
MEATLOAF of all things! Went through a stage of "winging" it each time, and I pulled one after another out of the oven that were almost unedible. As yet, not too big on baking... no sweet tooth here! Have dabbled, but find doughs/pastries especially difficult, perhaps as it's 90 degrees in my kitchen much of the year.
