Despite the heat rolling in when it did, and not that I'm a "naturalist" when it comes to food items, I began making my own concoctions like Onion Soup Mix, Taco Seasoning, and the like, I've begun wondering what - if any, impact, there will be on the "health & welfare" side of the coin... … MORE

Can't say that there were any ruby slippers around, nor a yellowbrick road, but last  night we did have a doozy of a storm... It was late, after 10pm, perhaps closer to 11, when the skies opened up, dropping a torrent of rain upon us.  The wind blew, the sky flashed and rumbled...  Satellite… MORE

First, I'd like to address the last comment on my last post...  I like the idea too, BSM! On to my tale of the evening! There are times that crazycook gets a bug up... guess you get it, and simply MUST COOK!  By the time my "coffee hour" had concluded, I had decided that I REALLY needed to… MORE

When I was 20, I thought I had the tiger by the tail, and that I was an adult... By the time I turned 30, I decided that at 20 I REALLY didn't know squat! It must have been about that time in my life, that I realized I had a little bit of insight when the need arose... turns out wisdom began… MORE

Since the days of Darren and Samantha Stevens (just to mention one, of the "era" I refer) I've been reminded of the whole status distinction of where a family might "stand" within the community.  This was even more evident during my years in England, where "class" was not what type of person… MORE

Before, and shortly after my ex-wife and I made the separation "legal," we began a tradition.  Sal had found a restaurant that offered the PEAK of ambience, if you timed your visit well enough, and made your reservation far enough ahead...  Birthdays were late March, and early April, so our… MORE

Well, folks, despite my "whaa-whaaing..." today went off without a hitch.  We were 5 in the end (short one, but understandably) and feasted on the pastrami - even have some left for us for another time around!  (No complaints here, for sure!)  Once my heart started beating again this… MORE

After a gruelling afternoon of shopping at our local Sprouts (Farmer's Market)... almost melting into a puddle on the seat of the car, my job was not finished.  Almost $40 worth of cheeses and produce needed to be put away... after which the d/w needed emptying, tidy up the kitchen, take a… MORE

Sorry, but since my first post this evening, I have had another thought... As I was growing up... ok I can recall back to about age 5, my family ate meat, pork, poultry, eggs, drank milk, ate sugar... and personally, I have no idea what "gluten" is...  We had flouride treatments at elementary… MORE

LOL, Mike... Greetings, all, I hope your plans for the 4th are all coming together!  Mine seem to to have gone "sideways," as I call it... my oldest, dearest friends, are all coming up with excuses! I guess it's time to "rewind" a few hours, at least... First response, a week ago...… MORE

About Me
Started cooking many years ago, and learned as I went. First meal may have been "steak & chips" at age 15, in Birmingham England, where I lived for several years. Mostly grew up in MI, transplanted to the desert 30yrs ago, or so. Favorite cookbook is "Better Homes", also enjoy "Great British Cooking, a well kept secret." Hesitate to call myself "expert," but friends do rave...
My favorite things to cook
Italian has been my "specialty" for some time, and my "signature" meal is Lasagne, salad, garlic bread, which I first made 20yrs ago... from SCRATCH, very first time I made it. (Never again, folks...) Now start with a big jar of sauce!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanks to my heritage, I have enjoyed trying foods from different cultures. We still have beer battered fish, and chips of course; ground meat dishes often, chicken occasionally, pork too. I would love to submit a bean dip recipe, however, my ex who gave me the original has passed, and I have no way to verify that it didn't come from another source! I also enjoy British cooking (with a few yankee twists) and once made Plum puddings, also known as Christmas puddings, as far as I know... what an ordeal that was, but well worth the effort. Today, there is mail order!
My cooking triumphs
Greatest triumph was not too long ago, when I held a sit down dinner for 12, Lasagne being the entree. It was a fund raiser I chose to sponsor, and am proud to say that "we" raised over $1000 from that meal alone, minimum donation being $25. All proceeds collected were donated; my partner and I provided the meal and beverages.
My cooking tragedies
MEATLOAF of all things! Went through a stage of "winging" it each time, and I pulled one after another out of the oven that were almost unedible. As yet, not too big on baking... no sweet tooth here! Have dabbled, but find doughs/pastries especially difficult, perhaps as it's 90 degrees in my kitchen much of the year.
