I certainly hadn't planned on going this direction this evening (night for most of you!) but the question came up regarding the term "butty" from the British cuisine.  Butty is simply a contraction of "buttered bread," and can contain any number of fillings... basically a "SANDWICH" but… MORE

This is written in one of my many books... I do not hold it as "gospel," however, I found it absolutely fascinating, and decided to share! Apparently, they were "invented" by the Earl of Sandwich, who as it would be was a compulsive gambler.  Not wishing to leave his game, the sandwich was… MORE

I went to Costco today, a place I've been avoiding, but really did need to get to!  I began as I usually do, meandering up and down the isles of office supplies, kitchen gadgets... ending up in the meat dept.  Bypassed it, without putting a single item in the cart!  As I approached dog food,… MORE

Sunday, it must have been, I cooked up some rotini... the multi colored stuff.  I was craving a pasta salad, and thinking that with temps approaching triple digits, a cold meal might be nice.  I sat in the frige untouched, since, until this evening.  I flat out didn't feel like diving into… MORE

I just heard a line of a movie that hit home, having over the years lost so many dear friends to this, or that...  Not verbatem, as out of context... " Rather than mourn the loss of a loved one, CELEBRATE the life that you knew..." I've been pretty chatty this night, so look back a few… MORE

All to often, I leave a post here, and by tomorrow, forget all that I wrote... although I ALWAYS read comments, in fact, they've come to mean quite a bit to me!  I try each day to comment re: comments.. but alas, there are times I just don't...  After leaving a post just a bit ago, I've gone… MORE

While I cannont attest that I was truly "in gear" as it were, to go on  a crazy (manic!) cooking binge, it was a great day...  My doc assures me that I'm not dead just yet, and friend paid a visit...  Now what will the crazykitchen whip up for dinner?  I began with ground beef and pasta... … MORE

Has anyone any opinions on just which came first?  I'd also like to understand the mind set of the very first person who broke an egg, cooked it...  then, ATE it, of course!  I doubt I could ever have been so bold! So, for some reason this morning, I got a wild hair to boil some eggs.  I had… MORE

I've never been one to arise before the sun... that is, unless I'm having a "bad night" where sleep is concerned.  I'm more than happy to get up between 9 and 10am!  Most nights, I've run out of steam and flop into bed with spice kitty, and the oggies on their beds around midnight... but then… MORE

Evening, all.  I've spent the last two hours looking at my binders of favorite recipes... well, and some I've yet to make.  Guess I could start pulling some of them!  Then again, I did save them for some reason or another!  After that little endeaver, I took a long look at the recipes I chose… MORE

About Me
Started cooking many years ago, and learned as I went. First meal may have been "steak & chips" at age 15, in Birmingham England, where I lived for several years. Mostly grew up in MI, transplanted to the desert 30yrs ago, or so. Favorite cookbook is "Better Homes", also enjoy "Great British Cooking, a well kept secret." Hesitate to call myself "expert," but friends do rave...
My favorite things to cook
Italian has been my "specialty" for some time, and my "signature" meal is Lasagne, salad, garlic bread, which I first made 20yrs ago... from SCRATCH, very first time I made it. (Never again, folks...) Now start with a big jar of sauce!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanks to my heritage, I have enjoyed trying foods from different cultures. We still have beer battered fish, and chips of course; ground meat dishes often, chicken occasionally, pork too. I would love to submit a bean dip recipe, however, my ex who gave me the original has passed, and I have no way to verify that it didn't come from another source! I also enjoy British cooking (with a few yankee twists) and once made Plum puddings, also known as Christmas puddings, as far as I know... what an ordeal that was, but well worth the effort. Today, there is mail order!
My cooking triumphs
Greatest triumph was not too long ago, when I held a sit down dinner for 12, Lasagne being the entree. It was a fund raiser I chose to sponsor, and am proud to say that "we" raised over $1000 from that meal alone, minimum donation being $25. All proceeds collected were donated; my partner and I provided the meal and beverages.
My cooking tragedies
MEATLOAF of all things! Went through a stage of "winging" it each time, and I pulled one after another out of the oven that were almost unedible. As yet, not too big on baking... no sweet tooth here! Have dabbled, but find doughs/pastries especially difficult, perhaps as it's 90 degrees in my kitchen much of the year.
