On the afternoon of May 1st, I went to my local convenience mart, bought a Dos Equis beer, and came home and drank it.  If it's good enough for "The Most Interesting Man in the World," I guess it's good enough for me! On May 2nd, I made huevos rancheros for breakfast, which I totally… MORE

I grew up listening to my dad complaining about rising prices...  My sis and I each got maybe a nickle allowance each week, and would look forward to WALKING the half mile to the store, where we might buy candy, or get a COKE in a returnable bottle!  Go figure, a whole candy bar!  Ok, my… MORE

My dear friend Audie sent me an email, which took me a while to read (through tears rolling down my cheeks) written by a woman with Lupus.  Her name, is Christine Miserandino, and while I don't have Lupus, her theory does indeed apply to my personal situation...  I told Audie not too long… MORE

Sorry, for another night blog of babble, but I've asked myself a question that I wish to ask of you, also...  "What Matters?" Does it matter that the potatoes are getting old, and beginning to sprout?  Does it matter if rice or pasta are a year old, before you buy them?  Does it matter when… MORE

What a keeper this one is!  Cooked carrot and onion in veg. broth, seasoned simply with parsley, salt, and garlic.  At the last minute, you add vermicelli and simmer till cooked.  At serving time, add grated cheese (of choice)   YUMMMM ! doesn't say it!  For the broth, I had Knorr brand… MORE

For my "U" soup, I chose Ultimate Potato Soup from right here at AR.  I LOVE potatoes, in any way, shape, or form...http://allrecipes.com/recipe/ultimate-potato-soup/detail.aspx    is the link.  It's actually a simple soup, of potato, celery, chicken broth and seasonings. This was a very… MORE

If you're like me, dreams are always  so fragmented that they make little to no sense, and can rarely be remembered... only bits and pieces.  This morning, I awoke from a dream, looked at the clock, and jumped out of bed.  Can't say that I was "ready" to get up, but the clock told me that I… MORE

Honestly, I don't have time to ever be lonely!  Perhaps I'm fortunate...  I enjoy rambling around Casa de Crazy with no other human contact!  I guess that's my point.  There's a big difference between  being "alone," and being "lonely."  I'm never ALONE...  I've always got two large dogs and… MORE

I've had friends over the years... some come, and some go, and others stay around for "the duration."  Sure, many of my "buds" love it when they're on the guest list for one of my soiree's!  One of my greatest "fans" is Denise, as she and I began talking food long before I became interested… MORE

I've warned you more than once, that this is a very involved recipe... and TRUST me, after making it yesterday, even I had underestimated it!  Don't get me wrong, it's sinfully tastey, but I can only hope that next time I remember my own advice, which will follow the recipe and it's… MORE

About Me
Started cooking many years ago, and learned as I went. First meal may have been "steak & chips" at age 15, in Birmingham England, where I lived for several years. Mostly grew up in MI, transplanted to the desert 30yrs ago, or so. Favorite cookbook is "Better Homes", also enjoy "Great British Cooking, a well kept secret." Hesitate to call myself "expert," but friends do rave...
My favorite things to cook
Italian has been my "specialty" for some time, and my "signature" meal is Lasagne, salad, garlic bread, which I first made 20yrs ago... from SCRATCH, very first time I made it. (Never again, folks...) Now start with a big jar of sauce!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanks to my heritage, I have enjoyed trying foods from different cultures. We still have beer battered fish, and chips of course; ground meat dishes often, chicken occasionally, pork too. I would love to submit a bean dip recipe, however, my ex who gave me the original has passed, and I have no way to verify that it didn't come from another source! I also enjoy British cooking (with a few yankee twists) and once made Plum puddings, also known as Christmas puddings, as far as I know... what an ordeal that was, but well worth the effort. Today, there is mail order!
My cooking triumphs
Greatest triumph was not too long ago, when I held a sit down dinner for 12, Lasagne being the entree. It was a fund raiser I chose to sponsor, and am proud to say that "we" raised over $1000 from that meal alone, minimum donation being $25. All proceeds collected were donated; my partner and I provided the meal and beverages.
My cooking tragedies
MEATLOAF of all things! Went through a stage of "winging" it each time, and I pulled one after another out of the oven that were almost unedible. As yet, not too big on baking... no sweet tooth here! Have dabbled, but find doughs/pastries especially difficult, perhaps as it's 90 degrees in my kitchen much of the year.
