Grilled Salmon I

Reviewed: Sep. 14, 2011
My husband loved this, but I found it far too sweet. If I make this again I'll add lots of ginger and maybe some sriracha to balance the sweetness.

PHILLY Bavarian Apple Torte

Reviewed: Sep. 14, 2011
The pastry itself is excellent- be sure to use real butter, not margarine. It takes on a browned butter flavor that is delicious. I will definitely be making this again- my family went nuts over it!

Delicious Ham and Potato Soup

Reviewed: Sep. 14, 2011
While the taste of this soup is excellent, I wasn't quite so crazy about the texture. It was a little thin for a cream soup, I thought. Next time I won't boil the potatoes with the rest, I'll bake them and scoop them out. That will help thicken it nicely.

Simple Whole Wheat Bread

Reviewed: Sep. 14, 2011
I scaled this recipe down to two loaves and added 2 tablespoons of vital wheat gluten to help with the rise. Baked for 28 minutes. This bread is delicious! My family loved it. Thanks for sharing, Nita.

S'mores Crumb Bars

These were perfect! I made them just as written and I wouldn't suggest changing a thing. In fact, I think they may be better than the real thing!

Rye Beer Bread

Reviewed: Aug. 13, 2011
This is a nice rye bread. I used molasses instead of sugar and added a heaping tablespoon of vital wheat gluten because I wanted a nice rise on it. It rose beautifully and made excellent reuben sandwiches. I do wish it was a little more robust in flavor, but for people that don't love dark breads, the fact that it isn't might be a bonus.

This is the best recipe this site has to offer and it's one that we should all make every day. Garnish with plenty of patience and joy. Serve heaping helpings- there's always plenty to go around!

Jim's Cheddar Onion Soda Bread

Reviewed: Mar. 17, 2011
This is a fantastic recipe. I used green onions and did the ole vinegar in the milk thing for buttermilk. I didn't make enough of the buttermilk, so I had to add a little extra plain milk to get the dough consistency right. Still, it turned out very well. I made biscuits and they took twenty minutes. I had company for dinner and these biscuits stole the show! Thanks for sharing this excellent recipe, Keri and Jim! *UPDATE* I just realized that I made a lucky mistake when making this bread. I added a cup each of the cheese and the onion rather than the suggested 3/4 cup each. It wasn't intentional this time, but it will be next time!

Cajun Crawfish and Shrimp Etouffe

Reviewed: Mar. 16, 2011
This is delicious and not too spicy. I did have to sub chicken stock for the fish stock because I couldn't get my hands on any fish stock. It still turned out beautifully. I will make this again for sure.

Marbled Almond Roca

Reviewed: Mar. 16, 2011
I've made this with salted butter and unsalted butter and I prefer to use salted with this recipe. It is a wonderful recipe that does indeed taste just like the roca you buy in the pink tins. After having made it a few times, I have learned that a thin layer of semisweet chocolate is the way to go- the vanilla chips make it a little cloyingly sweet in my opinion. Terrific recipe- thanks for sharing it, Niki.

Double Chocolate Biscotti

Reviewed: Mar. 16, 2011
I had never made biscotti before, but had read enough to know that I should be very worried about creating a crumbly mess. My worries were for nothing- these turned out perfectly! I did allow them to cool for about 15 minutes before slicing and I used an electric knife to slice- which probably helped with the crumble factor. This recipe is excellent and I will definitely use it again. They're actually better a few days out than they are fresh. Thanks, Janet!

Addictive Sweet Potato Burritos

Reviewed: Mar. 16, 2011
As written, I found this to be very bland, which was surprising to me given the list of spices. I ended up adding some Sriracha, lime juice and cilantro, which improved things considerably. Still, I don't think I'd make this again.

Dark Chocolate Cake II

Reviewed: Mar. 15, 2011
This is the best chocolate cake I've ever tasted! I added the vinegar to the milk (didn't measure- maybe more like a tablespoon though) and let it turn into "buttermilk" before using. I also added a splash of vanilla. I baked it in a bundt pan and it took 45 minutes. It was moist, dense and rich. Perfection! I topped it with dulce de leche (the boil in the can type) and then topped that with some Heath bits. This is the ultimate in sweet decadence. Thanks so much for this recipe, Kellygurll- I'll never use another recipe for chocolate cake again- this is IT!

Merlot Dipping Sauce

Reviewed: Mar. 10, 2011
This is an excellent sauce, but I don't feel it needs all of that butter. I halve the butter and it is still very rich. The first time I made it, I used the full amount and it was just overkill. Too rich to actually enjoy. So, wonderful sauce, just go easy (well, easier) on the butter.

Crab Dip

Reviewed: Jan. 26, 2011
I'm sorry to give this such a poor rating. I really thought I'd like it since I love crab. The only things you taste in this recipe are the cream cheese and the mayonnaise. After tasting it, I thought I could mask some of the cream cheese taste by adding a little lemon juice and Old Bay. That did improve it, but it's still not something I'd ever make again. I think a person has to be a huge fan of cream cheese to enjoy this dip.

Beef Stew VI

Reviewed: Jan. 26, 2011
This was so good. The rosemary is a lovely addition. I browned my beef in a little bacon grease instead of oil and then added several glugs of red wine and let the alcohol cook off before proceeding with the recipe. My family really went crazy over this. Thanks for sharing it, Paula!

My Best Clam Chowder

Reviewed: Jan. 26, 2011
This clam chowder knocked my socks off! I did saute my onions in a little bacon grease and added some chopped bacon at the end, but other than that, I stuck to the recipe. I was curious to see what the vinegar would do to the recipe. I tasted it before and after adding the vinegar, and all I can say is that it is an integral component. Don't even consider leaving it out. Thanks for the awesome recipe, PG- I can't wait to make it again!

Chicken Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 26, 2011
This is a great starter recipe for chicken soup that you can easily customize to meet your family's tastes. I left out the zucchini and added onion and celery. I also threw in a small bag of alphabet pasta and some thyme and marjoram. Thank you for the recipe, Anika!

Nonnie's Ham Chowder

Reviewed: Jan. 26, 2011
I wish I could give this 4.5 stars. While it was very good, I feel like something essential was missing. I added some celery that I cooked with the onion and also some garlic. I think next time I make this, I'll take the suggestion of another reviewer and stir in some cheese at the end. Thanks for the recipe, Kristin. My husband really loved this and I loved how simple it was to prepare.
