This recipe is amazing. Every time I make it people freak out about how good it is. I add in cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg to the portion of the butter-flour-sugar mixture mixed in with the apples. I think it's important to toss the apples with the mixture and not just pour on top. Also, be very careful not to overheat the butter-sugar mixture and make sure you have everything completely ready to go - crust, apples - before you start the butter-flour-sugar mix, because the mixture will become caramelized and too tough to work with very quickly.
I don't usually do a lattice pie, but just a standard double crust with some leaf cutouts for decoration.
